Moving advice

I'm moving 340 miles across the UK which is costing me an eye-watering amount just for the removal guys. I am looking for any recommendations on how best to pack clothing. Are there any specific bags (preferably transparent ones) that are cheap and disposable that will do the job? Or should I use wardrobe boxes? Anything cost-effective and efficient would be fab. Thanks.

Removal firms usually provide wardrobe boxes. We did a cross country move a couple of years ago and didn’t pay for packing but they did empty our wardrobes into the boxes. Drawers were kept full so long as they were not too heavy. Anything else we packed in suitcases. I did buy a few big soft zip bags from Amazon which were great for bedding and coats.
I found that quotes varied massively. We didn’t go with the cheapest and picked a firm with great reviews and a personal recommendation but they were still 50% cheaper than other quotes.

Thank you @Karmatime. Would you mind sharing the name of the company? I'm moving north to south. Feel free to DM.

Hi @LUBAR I was moving north to south and used Cheshire Removals.

If you’re moving to that part of the country they may well be worth a try and they do a free quote.
They were excellent, we did a much shorter move a year later and used a local firm and the difference was night & day!

We used bin bags

we also left clothes in drawers from memory - instructions from the removal company

Vacuum bags! We used a variety of them (eithe4 from Poundland or Amazon) last time we moved.

We moved that distance almost exactly - it’s expensive as it’s a 2 day trip for the guys - and had a few months storage added in

the whole process is expensive but it’s also very stressful and it’s worth getting someone you can totally trust rather than just the cheapest quote

we did our own packing but told them we have a few items like the TV we were worried how to pack and they said leave anything like that to them Which was instant relief which really counts in that manic time

edit - missed answer to question - clothes went in bin bags if they didn’t stay in the drawers
edit - because I had already answered - need tea !

I don't know if the removal companies have already suggested it but with a move of that far we stored our things overnight with the removal company. We didn't want to be moving our things in at 8pm. We used Pickfords because they could accommodate this. Plus we insured both houses at both ends from damage just in case due to how far we were moving.

It does mean you pay more but we crashed in the new house on a blow up bed and then they moved all our stuff in at 8am.

We used wardrobe boxes for some items and for chest of drawers they tested the weight and moved the whole thing in one go with everything still in it.

Can anyone recommend a removal form in Scotland?
