Hinged drawer cabinet for narrow hallway

Last year, we stayed at a mini chateau B&B in France with a shoes off policy. Guests put their shoes away in a large chest of drawers. What was genius was that each drawer had a hinged, flip down opening so each family had an entire row to themselves for shoes.

I have seen those narrow, modern shoe cupboards but this was different. No faffing with putting things in on an angle. No annoying drawers that get stuck. Just flip down the opening and slide them in. Has anyone seen anything like this or could they help me with a search term? Have spent days googling and nothing has come up.

I need something that can store about 30 pairs of shoes including size 11s (and growing). We don’t have a porch or proper sized utility. Don’t mind secondhand.

Alternatively, has anyone found slimline storage which hold a ton of shoes but which is deceptively small and is not ugly? We have a three/four storey narrow London Victorian terrace. And yes I know I have to declutter but it all accumulates close to the front door and I can not rely on them dragging stuff up five flights of stairs to bedrooms etc so something that encourages tweens and adults alike to put stuff away would be good.

I have honestly thought of moving house just to have a proper utility and wider hallway!

I was very pleased with this for a long time due to it's size and capacity. We only have one. Its perhaps not quite what you wanted, but really works well in narrow hallways. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/hemnes-shoe-cabinet-with-4-compartments-white-60156121/

Thank you @socialdilemmawhattodo . We have the Hemnes drawers in our rooms. I have seen their shoe storage too but wonder how many shoes it would really store? We have mainly trainers/chunky street wear shoes rather than elegant flats or high heels!

We bought a couple of the Hemnes ones for our previous house (left for our buyers as fixed to wall).

There's only the two of us at home, but still have loads of shoes, so just used them for everyday pairs (boots were kept by the back door and nicer shoes/sandals etc in upstairs cupboard). We found you could fit two pairs of small/lightweight shoes/crocs in each of the Hemnes 'drawers', but only one pair of boots.

We have an Ikea shoe cabinet. It might be Hemnes. 3 drawers, open shelf, wood look, about 140 x 20 x 50cm (by eye). Two layers of shoes in each drawer. It is excellent for shoes up to size 7 in the top layer and size 12 in the bottom layer of each drawer. Not so good for hightop boots.

On average 6 pairs of 'trainers' in each drawer. More for daintier shoes, fewer for size 12s.

Thanks @Greenglades . The door fronts are flip down like this but the drawers are not slanted/attachdd. Basically imagine a normal slim bookcase with hinged flip down doors across each shelf. I have just found a vintage one or two online I will try to link to:

My DIL had hers made by a joiner. She talked through the design, measured the space. He built it, she painted it. She did the same with the coat cupboard. Would this be a solution?

Greenglades · 07/05/2025 21:20

I like that as it’s classy OP. Is there another image to show the fronts opened?

Cluttercrown · 07/05/2025 21:21

Ooh that sounds good @justasking111 . I guess I don’t have enough of a ‘vision’ for the design for aesthetics perhaps to justify it. All I know is that the one in the chateau was very practical and could easily fit all our shoes! Do you know roughly what she paid for something like that?

Look for music cabinets and secretaires.

I’ve got the hemnes one painted with navy blue frenchic paint. My friend has five boys aged between 10 and 21 and she has three hemnes in a row in her hallway.

I think she paid £800 for the cupboards. consisting of two coat cupboards with a seat in the middle, underneath were cupboards. Architrave across the top. It's gorgeous. Don't know what the shoe unit cost.

If your narrow hallway has high ceilings, nothing to stop you creating something on top of the shoe cupboard, maybe with glazed doors? Internal lighting.
