Ugh. New house feels pokey.

Our new house was empty when we visited it and bought it. Now we’ve moved in with our stuff it feels… pokey…

We knew it was going to be a tad smaller than our previous place but didn’t think we’d feel it. Now that we’re in, some rooms feel annoyingly laid out too, and a bit dark…. Our old place was so light and airy and spacious (we were renting though).

We will have to be clever with storage I guess and may be able to put in extra windows. It’s really the bedrooms that feel small.

And we had hoped to do it up before we moved in but for one reason or another that hasn’t happened. So my visions of how it would be aren’t reality. And some visions need to be re-done as now we’re in we can see they’re not actually even possible…….

Tell me it’s just an adjustment phase and I’ll soon be delighted with it? Pleeeeeease!

Give yourself some time to settle in. Everyone has that “What have I done?!” phase when they move to a new house.

My advice would be to take your time, so one room at a time and get to know how you live in the house and how it looks at different times of day and year. I moved in December and have just done a few rooms. However they look so different with just cosmetic changes. The right colour paint and flooring can really open up a room.

Do you have large furniture from old place? Maybe some things like sofa are just too big?

philip hue strip lights under beds or under cabinets in dark central hallways might help with darkness. Add mirrors

Thank you.

We are waiting for building work to start. We will add Velux windows as there are several sloped ceilings, and downstairs we’ll open up some rooms by knocking down walls etc so it will be different eventually. But I’m worried that even with that it will still feel a bit pokey.

Some furniture is definitely too big. But it means for example reducing our kingside bed to a queen.

I keep telling myself it’s an adjustment period and it’ll be ok. It’ll have to be!!!
