Builders yard next to house

There is an old pub behind my house which has been turned into student flats. The old pub garden over the years got very overgrown and has now been taken on by builders as a builders yard and workshop. It’s very noisy with drilling, hammering, sawing etc all day. Does anyone know whether this sort of use should have planning approval? I don’t want to go up to the builders and ask them about their plans for the land as I’m not very confident and I have to see them every day so don’t want bad feeling.

I’m usually very live and let live but it is such a noisy and dusty thing to have for the long term in a residential street. Thank you.

Buildings & land generally need planning for change of use unless it’s in the same class. Check the council website to see if it’s been applied for/approved.

If you are operating a business from your house that is likely to disturb or be disruptive to other people then yes you normally need permission.

Otherwise people could do crazy stuff like turn their terraced house into a nightclub.

Yes it should have planning permission.
If PP has been granted, there should be conditions on the permission limiting hours etc
Report it to the planning department so that they can investigate.
Even if there is permission, you can still report noise, dust, fumes etc to Environmental Health as a nuisance.

Thank you all. I appreciate the advice. I’ll have a look at the planning permission for the site and if relevant contact the planning dept.
