Help me decorate my tiny downstairs loo

We have been in our house four years and my husband has done loads of work on it. However there is still much to do, and the down stairs loo is way down the list of priorities. But I would really like to make it just a bit less awful. He’s away on Wednesday night and I was wondering what I could do in that window of opportunity, or in slower time, to give it a glow up. The main issue is the pipes and cables running floor to ceiling and all along one wall and the waste from the basin, sporting dayglo orange tape at the joins. I have no proven DIY skills and a budget of, say, £50. I have tools but not sure I am competent enough to box anything in. Ideally I was thinking some nice wallpaper behind the mirror (although loathe to buy a roll when I only need one piece) and then a dark green on the other walls.

Any ideas or tips gratefully received.

This is my tiny downstairs loo. Unfortunately I haven’t got a ‘before’ picture, but it had a tiny wall mounted sink with the pipes running along the wall towards the loo, the man who fitted this new set cut into the plasterboard and put the pipes behind it. He did the tiling and fake panelling and I painted the panelling and wallpapered it myself (with DH’s help). I absolutely love it and could spend a lot of time in there!

That is lovely, and I like the idea of using the same colour on walls, ceiling and furniture.

It suited me, cause I can't cut in 😂

I envy OP because she actually has motivation to make her tiny toilet room nicer. I have a tiny nasty toilet room & am realising I will never make it better, I have some kind of deficit preventing it from happening.

@lljkk
I waited 20 years for that loo refit 😂. We just kept putting it off as it was so unimportant, but I am so pleased with it that I wish I had done it years ago.

I asked ChatGPT. It's creating a mock up but there's a delay apparently. I used it the other day for front garden ideas, its quite useful I think

Absolutely! Even with a very limited budget, you can give this under-the-stairs toilet a glow-up with some clever, low-cost tricks. Here are suggestions focusing on budget-friendly improvements:

-1. Conceal or Disguise the PipesDIY Pipe Boxing: Use MDF offcuts or stick-on vinyl trunking to box in the pipes. Paint it the same color as the walls for a seamless look.
Wrap with Rope or Paint: For a quirky, rustic touch, wrap visible pipes in jute rope or paint them to match the walls.

  1. Add Some Wall StylePeel-and-Stick Wallpaper: Choose a bold or botanical pattern for the back wall behind the mirror to create a feature wall.
Wall Art or Frames: Add a couple of framed prints or typography for character.
  1. Upgrade the Mirror
If possible, swap out the mirror for one with a statement frame (Facebook Marketplace or charity shops often have great finds).Alternatively, paint the existing frame with gold, black, or a pop of colour using sample-size tester pots.
  1. Enhance the Vanity
Paint the Unit: Use all-surface paint to give the sink unit a fresh new color—navy, sage green, or even matte black.Add New Knobs: Swap the cupboard knobs for something stylish—brass, ceramic, or vintage (inexpensive from eBay or hardware stores).
  1. Soft Furnishings & AccessoriesTiny Shelf or Ledge: Add a small floating shelf above the toilet roll holder for plants or décor.
Toilet Roll Holder Upgrade: Consider a matte black or brushed gold holder (can be found for under £10). Add a Small Plant: A faux trailing plant or mini succulent can really elevate the vibe. Matching Soap Dispensers: You’re already partway there—matching hand soap bottles always look more luxe

.6. Better Lighting
If it’s not too tricky, change the bulb to a warm white LED and consider a stick-on battery-operated wall sconce for ambiance.

  1. Tidy Up the Window
Add a small sheer curtain or a frosted window film to soften the light and add privacy. If that’s too much, a small trailing plant or ornament on the sill can still make a difference.

That is useful, thanks. I wonder whether it used this thread as an input to the answer 🤔. Definitely like the idea of plants - fake ones even better as there is so little light. Off to get some testers tomorrow!

This is what it gave me! It wasn't clever enough to box the pipes and show me - although I could ask it and be more specific.

Just paint the pipes. Do not put fairy lights on them. Lipstick on a pig, as you say. Pictures or cool postcards on the walls. A nicer cabinet under the sink.
