Empty property for sale

I have an empty house for sale. Does anyone know anything about what I should do regarding gas/electric? I’m assuming I still have to pay a provider but they all seem to offer fixed rates with a penalty charge if you leave before the term ends.

Do any of them do empty property deals? Thanks.

I don't think you have to sign up to a contract

The standing charges are probably higher than you think and it probably won't make much difference as the usage will be very low. So I would just ask the current supplier to keep supplying but don't sign fixed rate thing unless they confirm that the contract ends when you sell the property. Which it must do really? I sold my uncle's empty property a few years ago and everything was switched off so it was just standing charges.

It was summer though, and it only took a couple of months to sell. I would have had to have the heating on if it had gone into winter to avoid frozen pipes etc

Thank you so much for your reply, that’s really helpful.

When my dm died and house left empty I transferred her electricity account into my name.
Bills were very small and house eventually was sold. The expensive part was the house insurance for an empty property.

With octopus you can just pay monthly for what you use. So around £32 for the standing charges in warm weather.

Have you got the property insured? When I was selling my Mum's house, insurance was a bit of an issue. During the winter I had to heat the property to 15C and have the property inspected regularly.

I know you did not ask about insurance but if you have to heat to a certain temperature that will affect the gas/electricity use.

My Octopus deal has no exit fees. Its not extremely cheap as the insurance requires a certain heat level to be maintained.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have empty property insurance. The house is for sale, so hopefully I won’t run into the problem of cold weather.

Did you get someone to refer you? If so you'll get 50 quid credit and so will they. That would cover your costs for a while.

I'll do it 🤣
