Bathroom refit an expensive quote or reasonable?

I have been quoted £1,700 for just the labour to replace a medium size bathroom. I will remove all the tiles and have bought a new shower, a shower surround, toilet, sink, taps, shower screens instead of tiles and all the silicone etc.
we will pay a plumber to move some pipes and an electrician to wire up the shower. So it’s just the labour to clear and refit. Does that sound a reasonable price?

Yes it's very cheap

RichWithNoSelfControl · 21/04/2025 19:08

That's a bargain!

Feelingstrange2 · 21/04/2025 19:13

Cheap. My dad's was £6,000 in 2023. That included taking out and disposal (one day two men plus costs), plastering (one day one man) as well as fitting the supplied bathroom materials with thermostatic shower, toilet and vanity unit.

We did painting, and flooring and there was no change to the electrics.

Roselilly36 · 21/04/2025 19:17

That Is really cheap, how did you find this plumber? Was he recommended? I would be suspicious of such a cheap price, well below the going rate.

Favouritefruits · 21/04/2025 19:19

I’d snap his hand off! That’s a bargain! He couldn’t really do it much cheaper it’ll prob take him a week and a half so it’s only really £200 a day roughly

TheFlis · 21/04/2025 19:21

We’re paying £3500 for a fairly small bathroom. That’s for removing current sink, bath and tiles (no loo, does not include disposal), retiling walls and floor, and putting in a new walk in shower and basin unit.

Lovingtheglitter · 21/04/2025 19:47

Thanks everyone that’s reassuring to know. It’s someone who has done some work for us before but it’s been years since I had a bathroom done so wasn’t sure if it was a good price. I’ll be booking him in!

We paid £3k for labour including remove and refit, minimal plastering, tiling, touching up paintwork, reboarding ends of bath due to length of room and flooring.

LibertyLily · 22/04/2025 11:25

That's very cheap! A family member (SE, not London) recently had a quote to replace a d/s bathroom (it currently had bath, loo, basin) with a lootility/shower room - £17k including labour and basic sanitaryware. They DIYed it with better quality sanitary ware and it came in under £5k.

GasPanic · 22/04/2025 11:48

I think it's cheap, but is it really that much work if a plumber is doing the plumbing and an electrician the electrics ?

I'd be surprised if it was going to be more than 2-3 days work if there is no tiling involved.

The only plumbing is moving a pipe because we are moving the sink. And the electrician will wire the shower in but he will be doing everything else. I decided against tiles as the grout cleaning does my head in and getting shower panels instead but he will fit them as well

I think lots of posters haven't read your post properly & are basing it on him doing more of the work than he is.

I do think that &1700 is probably the going rate for what you need doing though and if it's somebody you've used before and trust then I would go with it.

Mosaic123 · 22/04/2025 15:31

Very cheap.

May I suggest you buy really good quality items as labour is usually the main cost with bathrooms? Also please include ample storage.

Bringbackspring · 22/04/2025 16:41

That's a decent quote. We paid similar recently for a partial refit. I did most of the prep work and then the decorating to finish. We kept the original suite and had the fitter install new flooring and wall panelling, new radiator, new shower cubicle and new light up mirror cabinet. I sourced everything, down to the fixtures and fittings. Took him approx 7 days, but they weren't all full days. The last 2 days were only a few hours each. While I usually try to avoid tradies and do things myself, the panelling was too big a job for me and the panels are so expensive, I didn't want to waste any by making a hash of it. Fortunately the fitter turned out to be a thoroughly lovely guy.

I should add, we did our own disposal as well. That kept the costs down.

Thank for all the tips and views everyone I have booked him in for mid May. Can’t wait for it to be done now!

Reasonable? It strikes me as incredibly cheap.

dogcatkitten · 24/04/2025 10:32

How many man days labour is the question to ask and the rate per man per day. If it's two men for 5 days that's £170/man/day which seems very cheap, if they do it in half that time or one man per day it's £340/man/day which is a reasonable wage (not spectacular) although there may be travelling costs as well. So I would say it's a good deal if they do a good job. It may also be several part days fitted in between other work, as things have to be left between stages.

FrenchandSaunders · 24/04/2025 10:36

My DH is a plumber and that is very cheap. I know he's not doing the plumbing but it's still cheap for these days.
