Splitting a room in rented house

THATbasicgirl · 19/04/2025 09:22

Im looking at moving to a rented property and would need to make some kind of partition to split a large bedroom in to two rooms

Has anyone done this?

Pics and tips please!

What is the purpose of the two rooms? For me, it depends what they are going to be used for and who is going to be using them.

Two teenagers bedrooms

Check with your landlord, I suspect this would be material alteration to the property and against most private leases.

A temporary partition? Some sort of room divider or screen? Check Pinterest for ideas.

Im looking at a non perminant method e.g room dividers / positioning of furniture etc

IKEA kalax units?

One of the tall large IKEA Kalex units would do the trick and also works as storage that can be accessed on both sides.

If that’s too chunky a tall bookshelf will do.you can get skinny bookshelves you could have back to back so both people both get outfacing shelves rather than one person just gets a view of the back.

Room dividers/screens can be expensive and can only be used as room dividers/screens again. If you move in the future you can always use a Kalex unit or shelves.

When using the kallax in this way does it need securing to wall / floor / ceiling?

Also don’t feel you have to stretch the divider/unit too far across the room. It’s amazing how just having division at the top third of the bed (the ‘head end’) still provides privacy without sacrificing space and looking like a barricade.

It depends on which one you get. The more square it is, the sturdier it is.

If you go tall without the matching width that is likely to topple.

Thanks for this!

We do actually already own a few kallax units so could play around with what looks best

If worried and unable to attach things to walls I would consider storing some weights in the ery bottom shelves to add extra stability.

Good luck OP!

Attaching to the wall should be fine - i just wasnt sure if needed to be attached on more than one side

I have exactly this. It is the 5x5 one and just sits on the floor down the middle of the room.
I guess it depends where the door is if you don't want to walk through one side to get to the other.

Depends how much privacy they need: same sex teens or boy /girl?
And whether they want soundproofing as well 🙄

housethatbuiltme · 19/04/2025 10:40

Its expensive but you can get these giant lego brick things designed to build temporary walls.

Another option is sliding wardrobe doors from places like Ikea or to run a curtain track and have a curtain devide.

This arrangement is really good. (I just have the free standing unit and cheap storage boxes from amazon, but my room is mainly a spare room and office now as DC have left home. The sleeping area is behind the kallax and the door opens into the office area, so walking through isn't a problem).
You can fit so much stuff into a kallax unit, I wish I had discovered it years ago.

Halfemptyhalfling · 19/04/2025 11:09

You can get bunk beds which act as a room divider with one bed being one side and one the other side of the divider
