Moving a gas meter

Does anyone know how feasible this is?

We're in the midst of new kitchen planning and having a nightmare trying to make all our wishlist happen.

We have come up with a solution that involves using the cupboard currently housing our washing machine for the tall fridge/freezer, but at the moment there is a gas meter at eye line in the cupboard. Is it even possible to move it?

Thanks in advance.

It is possible, but you'll need a plumber licensed for gas piping to do it.

only the gas network operator can move the meter as it involves working on the supply side of the meter and that pipework belongs to them so only they can touch it.

A plumber with gas registration is not the person to do it.

Obviously the job itself is perfectly feasible, so it just depends on cost.

Yes it’s possible but depending on how much needs doing it’s not cheap. We can’t really advise on here but yes, the gas board most likely need to be involved, so I would contact them first.

Depends on your budget and how far you want to move it. A gas safe engeneer can move it say a couple of feet for a couple of hundred quid- i've just had a gas meter in the middle of the back wall moved to a corner to be boxed in like this, but a 'big' move like to a different room or outside involves notifying the supplier and is more like a couple of thousand plus

I had ours moved in order to convert a garage into a bedroom and ensuite. I had to contact cadent (it may be a different company in your area). The builder could do so much preparation work then cadent came to do the transfer. I'm not sure how much it'll cost you as I got a discount because it was a necessary change to accommodate disability. It was an easy process though.

I would contact your supplier in the first instance but depending on how much it needs moving, more than about a metre I think Cadent may have to do it, it can be expensive ££££

I just need it moved up the wall two feet, to clear the height of the fridge freezer.

This is the right answer. DH is a gas engineer.

It might be back to the drawing board... This kitchen will be the end of me!

Maybe contact your supplier to see what's feasible if it's only 2 feet.

We moved ours in our last house it was originally in a cupboards in the kitchen and we had it moved outside when we had a new kitchen. Candent were the ones who did it. Took a few weeks to arrange it all we had to apply online and it was a painful process but so worth it to get the ugly thing out the house .

Moving the meter easy, it's moving the pipe that supplies it that is hard. If you want to extend or shorten it then it's not as bad.
However, indoor gas meters are not really installed nowadays, and my neighbour managed to get his moved to the front wall on the outside for free, including reconnecting his boiler and hob, because it was deemed not as safe as it should be being under the stairs.
So worth taking that angle if you're happy to move it outside?
Other option is install a heat pump and electric hob and dump the gas completely.
