Hello, I'm not very good at interior looks, or how to search for the things I'm trying to look at (if that makes any sense), so I thought I'd ask here.
We live in a 50's semi and we have a small fireplace in the bedroom. The tiles were painted white, and I dislike what's underneath! These tiles measure 10x10.
I would like to re-tile, and envisage the bedroom being dark green, but do you have any other thoughts about what we could do? I'm considering a bio-oil fire in there also...

I don't think you can retile those sort of fireplaces. The tiles are shaped to curve round the edge of the fireplace, so impossible to find replacements, and they are made by lying the tiles into a mold and then filling the mold with tile adhesive, so if you remove the tiles, the fireplace may just fall apart.
Also, it is a original feature to the house and so would be a shame to remove it.

I would repaint them a nice 50s pastel colour or maybe go for a slightly art deco feel so darker with a gold sunburst pattern.

If you absolutely hate them then remove the whole thing and put something different in.

Thank you, yes, I'd thought about painting, but some broke when we unboarded it as they'd glued the board over!

I had two like this in our 1930s house that were also painted over in white and I restored them because I thought the original tiles were lovely. Inspo in case I can convince you to save them.

Alternatively, you can get replacement tiles for these at a place called Twentieth Century Fireplaces.

@sallyanne33 I thought they had gone out of business but the website seems to still be working.

Ah brilliant! I'll take a look! I so wanted to love the original tiles, but alas.

@ThisIsTrifficult you could repair the broken tiles then paint over them. My bedroom fireplace is a bit earlier than yours but all the tiles were painted white when we moved in. I suspect the white-looking tiles inside the surround are also blue like the hearth and they look fine painted.
