Looking at a property for sale that is single brick thick and wondered if anyone has done this and how they found the process.

A neighbour had this problem. She bought the house for cash then couldn't sell it as it was not considered mortgageable. Eventually, she did the wall from the inside so she could sell, as the outside wall had a water pipe running alongside it. I don't know how much the work cost her but I would not buy a house with that problem.

Yes it is a cash purchase and unmortageable. But a great plot, great location, and priced accordingly. I'm aware this is not an easy or cheap fix, but certainly worth considering.

DPs house and most of their town are 1930s bungalows which are single skin. It was certainly a cold house growing up until they improved it slightly by installing central heating, double glazing and loft insulation. You do have to keep an eye out for damp penetrating through the brickwork. Not sure any were double skinned that we were aware of in their road (apart from newer extensions) but they still sell well. I suppose you could add a layer internally but unless they're big rooms you'd could lose a lot of space and whether the cost of doing it would work when trying to resell.

Following, as we’ve just bought a place with a single skinned extension. We’ve had one builder in so far to quote for upgrading it, and it’s going to be expensive, but we were prepared for that.

@Imtoooldforallthis when you say single skin, you mean 9” brickwork? Or 4”?

Nearly every Victorian terrace is single skin, 9” brickwork, as well as hundreds of thousands of others.

Do you have a photo of some of the brickwork?

I think 4" brick and timber clad, we've have money available to buy and renovate and have done properties before, but this is new to us.

Will you be having that done internally or externally.

Internally, waiting for the quote to come…

HellsBalls · 15/04/2025 16:58

How does it work internally? You will do it in timber? What about the internal walls where they meet the exterior wall? Are they cut down with a cutter to create a gap?
