Toddler friendly gravel??

Half of our garden has stones on it and they're very sharp. We have a toddler and I can already see the tears when he inevitably trips on them. I also don't like that I can't walk on them barefoot. Are there any stones I can replace them with that aren't so jaggy / sore underfoot and more toddler friendly? Does such a thing exist? Or is it pointless effort

Sand?

Slate chips? They lie flat. But realistically I’d be seeing if you could turn it back to grass or pave it. Slate will be sore if you were unlucky enough to catch one.

Pebbles or pea gravel

Coconutter24 · 12/04/2025 10:08

Can you put resin over them?

Geneticsbunny · 12/04/2025 10:55

Slate would make a nasty cut if you fell over. It's like glass. Could you give your gravel away on Freecycle and put some lawn seed down?

I think you need to come up with something that isn't stone.

It won't be an area children should be on much. Pea gravel? Or do they eat that?!

Bark would be more child friendly

Edited

It's pea-sized gravel.

I agree with a pp - bark chips would be better.

How many children do you have? How long is this likely to be a problem? I think you're worrying a little too much.
