Property Deeds when Mortgage Settled

Hi, my DH and I finally paid off our mortgage a few months ago at the end of last year. It was a long time coming after more than 30 years of paying one. Our last mortgage lender was Virgin. We've had a letter from them confirming that it's been repaid in full.

Our query is, how do we go about getting a formal copy of the deeds from Land Registry, and charges? It would be nice to have a copy (maybe even framed?). I've looked on the Land Registry website but couldn't find a phone number for enquiries.

Has anyone obtained a nice copy of their deeds. We'd appreciate any advice.

TIA

Mortgage companies usually don't hold deeds now land is registered. You could ask your lender if they have them in storage and they should post them to you.

You can download the title register and plan online (£7 each) but there isn't much point unless you want to check your names are correct on there and the charge has been removed.

ETA: do check the charge has been removed (lender should be able to confirm on phone or by post but if not pay the £7). I've known charges to still be on titles when the owner had long since paid it off. Banks just forget sometimes.

Ours were returned to the who finalised the transaction to be stored in a secure fire proof safe.

I believe you can now get information online, but if you're interested in original deeds, then confirm where the deeds can be sent.

They may not exist. Ours was destroyed by bombing in WW2.

Mine were returned to me when I changed lenders sometime in the early 2000s, I think this was from Cheltenham and Gloucester to Nationwide, at that time the Land Registry scanned everything, so my original paperwork was for information only. I got a letter from Nationwide to say they had no charge on the property anymore once the mortgage was paid off.

my parents never had their property registered electronically with the LR as they’d lived there 50 years, when dad died we had it registered for the first time and the paperwork was taken from storage at the Halifax and sent to mum. I hold that now for her, but again, I think it is just for historical information and value.

I would have expected them to have been returned to you at the point you changed lenders after the LR started making records electronic.

Your title is almost certainly registered at the Land Registry OP. You can get copies here www.gov.uk/get-information-about-property-and-land/copies-of-deeds
