Rewiring house with asbestos

After survey we need to get electrics checked and suggested someone out to check if ceilings are asbestos.

If house does need a rewire we will have to get the asbestos removed as it will be disturbed?

@CrispyMonkey I’m in this exact situation with a 60s house we’re purchasing with asbestos artex. Did you decide what to do in the end?

With artex - you can do electrical work very carefully by minimising the work to areas around the existing light fittings, cutting out new areas by hand rather than drilling, and painting areas before and as you work with a PVA & water mix. Hairspray, liberally sprayed, catches fibres and drags them to the floor. Or so I was told by an asbestos contractor anyway.

Your electrician can wear a respirator and essentially you want dust minimised as much as possible. Hire a H class hoover (or buy one) to clean any dust up.

You can also plaster skim over artex, or overboard and skim, or if you just want it gone, carefully remove the whole ceiling.

Artex tends to contain chrysotile asbestos which while not safe, is less harmful than other types of asbestos.

If your asbestos survey says amosite or crocilodite, don't touch it and get it all professionally removed. In fact, I would pull out of a sale if those two came up on a survey, but only because the removal costs are just too high and it's too dangerous to touch yourself.
