Does the placement for the door look odd?

We're getting our porch built and I am worried the layout looks odd. I should have told the builder to have the door in the centre but now it's too late. It's not finished yet but do you think it would look okay? Do you have any ideas to make it look better? I was thinking of maybe adding wood cladding on the bigger side but I don't know if that would work

Also it leaves you room for a handy cupboard or coat hanging track/shoe rack.

I think it's best like that. It aligns with the internal door. Will leave you useful space on the right for shoes and shiz. Use the wider external space for your door name/number sign.

The door placement is correct.

As others have said, they’ve lined it up with the other door, it would be very annoying if they hadn’t. I would ask them if they could add a letter box to the other side and then it looks right. If not I’d add a planter with trellis to make a feature of the wall.

Yes it looks fine. Nice space for a trellis and flowering creeper or a potted tree too.

Mine is exactly the same and I've never thought it looked odd - in fact I had to check because it has never occurred to me that it was out of the ordinary as it's the same as quite a few others in my street. We have a light and our door number on the wide side and inside the porch there is room for storage.

It will look absolutely fine once got a light, maybe a hanging basket on the wall.

The OP had been very quiet. Did you confirm that you need placing permission for this work?

It’s blocking light to the bay window and is too big. It dominates. Slabby appearance and has left and awkward triangle between it and the bay window. It’s not very attractive.

Completely agree. Does look very big and overpowering. Will be even more so
once its roof is completed.

I think it's fine. Ideally it would have a long, narrow window to the right of the door to balance it, but if not, a trellis with something growing up it would look lovely. And there's space for coats and shoes inside the porch, which is very useful.

pearbottomjeans · 11/04/2025 18:10

Nah, I’d have it to line up with the internal door too. Be nice once it’s done and you’ve got space there for a lovely climber etc.

Make sure the letterbox is at waist height or your postie will hate you forever.
