Is there such a thing as someone who builds / creates clothes lines for your garden?

i don’t mean rotary lines but long clothes lines with poles sunk into the ground and pulleys to pull the line up, or even a pulley system so that you don’t have to move up and down the line pegging out but can stand in one place.

you can see I’ve thought about this🤣. Do these people exist?!

Buy the bits and build it yourself? Or ask a local builder?

My PILs had a pulley system out of their 1st floor window to a pole in the garden, but my FIL built it. First floor flat with no garden.

You want a handyman.

Pedant1Scorner · 05/04/2025 16:49

because it can't be done by someone without a penis.

You can get a retractable line that you just fix to a wall or fence and then pull it out and fix to a hook? Dead easy to put up. I guess poles would have to go quite far into the ground and probably into concrete?

I have a pulley in my small garden. It raises the washing so high it dries very quickly. If something happens to it, a local handyman is the go to person. They're used to dealing with problems ( we all have pulleys round here). Ask on your local Facebook group- there'll always be a recommendation there.

Very apt name and a useless contributer.

I don’t recall naming the sex of said person.

I get most "undefinable" jobs done by a local carpenter. His basic skill set is he knows how to use various electric saws, a drill and a spirit level which translates to the ability to do a lot of domestic repairs.

Handy Person (of Gender)

MuffinsOrCake · 06/04/2025 14:36

yes, in my country our men do. You can solder it, make it from wooden posts, from metal posts, from concrete posts also.

Shetlands · 06/04/2025 14:39

Someone who can erect a fence can do it - metal poles concreted deep into the soil with pulleys attached at the top.

I’ve found a really handy YouTube video via Pinterest and am giving it a go myself between two fence posts already in place and a set of weight lifting pulleys.

one fence will need a chunk of wood for me to get the correct angle for the pulley but this is most definitely doable!

thanks everyone.

I've got something like this (may even be the same one) and it is so rubbish. The line forever stretches so that you end up with washing sagging down to the floor (if drying towels etc ) they just can't cope with any weight on them. I'd love for someone to fit a pulley/pole system!

Slurple · 06/04/2025 21:41

I'm having this exact same conversation with DH at the moment. I have the same Minky line and it always sags, can only handle one load of washing. I want a tall pulley system built so that I can get the laundry up and out of the way and we can use the rest of the garden.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/04/2025 22:11

Brabantia do two sizes of wall fixed washing lines for your outside walls. Either is brilliant, and they never sag.

TomatoSandwiches · 06/04/2025 22:14

My village cobbler does all sorts of things like this, if you have one local its worth popping in if you get stuck.

Can you link the video please, it sounds like it might be useful to me in my new home.

I really want to do this, we have a small garden and really want to pull the washing up high out of the way

I think that poster was responding to the poster above them, not to you.

You need some of these!

My washing line is attached to the back wall with a pulley and tied round a tree at the bottom of the garden. It's fab!

TeaAndStrumpets · 07/04/2025 07:27

I think most clothes lines will sag, pulley system or not, so a clothes prop is useful to spread the load.

PersonalBest · 07/04/2025 07:50

Our handyman did it. He is a man, but a handy woman could do it too! Basically anyone at home with a power drill, saw, etc. It's fixed to the wall of the house and a fence post.

Very true, though it can get in the way of hammering, I’m told.
