Are there people out there that haven't instructed Surveyors when purchasing their house?

Nah, I didn't bother. This house is 250 years old. I didn't need to pay £500 for someone to tell me it's not up to the latest regs. No shit! 😂

I had my brother look over it. I come from a trades family. I negotiated a few grand down for one egregious issue that was an actual immediate fire risk and for the rest, I knew what I was buying.

Would a survey not check a boiler ?

No, they are surveyors - not plumbers or central heating specialists. A survey recommends you get the boiler checked. To be fair it was working at the time - a month later....whole new central heating system!

That would be a stupid thing to not have the house surveyed. I strongly recommend you have an architect inspecting the house, to advise on potential for future extensions

Not everyone wants future extensions and not every house needs to be extended to its absolute maximum.

Most people though have a vision for their house and it's a shame buying a property and then find out you can't do anything to modify it. Unless you're building a house from the foundations up, I never walked into a house and feel like it was exactly as I wanted it to be

I’m having this debate at the moment - am buying a 5 year old house and thinking whether it’s worth spending £550 on a survey for. Most surveyors don’t seem to do the more basic level 1 at all these days.

I bumped into a retired surveyor friend last week and asked him. He said he wouldn’t bother!

Don't most new houses have a 10 builders guarantee anyway?

I've always had surveys but often they don't pick up things. I think they are important though so you don't end up with a money pit and my nerves couldn't take it.

We had a survey and ended up with a money pit!

I chose not to have a survey on my most recent purchase, but I did schedule in a "survey visit" when I went in myself to slowly and carefully check the property. I certainly agree that paying a surveyor to cut and paste a load of disclaimers into a document is often not good value for money, but the process of making sure you are going in with both eyes open about the condition is worth following.
