I'm adding an upstairs bathroom in a traditional style so white Metro tiles on half the wall and chrome fittings. Shower only.

Trying to decide whether:

1.Vinyl flooring should be wood effect or patterned. I love the Victorian style patterns of Harvey Maria but would I get bored with them in time?

  1. White metros and dark upper walls eg dk green or F&B inchyra blue or even wallpaper OR dark tiles and light upper walls. All those green tiles might be a bit overpowering.

I have fallen down a Pinterest rabbit hole because I also like wall pannelling 😆. Bathroom is 6.5 sq m so a reasonable size.

Feel free to show me your bathrooms or comments. I have included a few photos of the style I like.

This is very much a personal thing but I hate painted walls in a bathroom. When you get condensation they just feel weirdly damp and seem to take forever to properly dry out.

We've not long had a bathroom done, about a year ago. We opted for panelling throughout. So much easier to keep clean, literally just wipe. And no icky weird damp paint feeling haha!!! I also loved the continuous look of the panels.

I spent quite a while investigating panels and learning about the different types, including which ones were cheap and poor quality, and how to spot the higher end ones (don't go for those with a hollow core basically!)

We had it redone late last year.

I'm not directly answering your question, but I'd advise against any fixtures with spaces behind or in the case of the bath, under. Adds extra cleaning issues. Would always go for closed units.

We have painted walls and they are fine. I can't add a pic but we have emerald green tiles to waist height with a free standing bath and then it is painted blush pink above the tiles.

I like my bathroom fairly plain, white tiles, neutral coloured floor. Then I go wild with bright towels and mats, a few plants and coloured candles along the bath. I do tend to get bored easily, so this way I can change it often.

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/04/2025 11:14

No photo as I’ve always gone with very plain and sleek and modern i.e. not your style, mainly because I don’t like cleaning the bathroom much and the olde worlde style with lots of chrome, twiddly bits, and moulding and panelling are a chore - worth thinking about your appetite for that.

You mention getting bored of the style you like: if you’re somebody who does tend to gravitate towards a trend then I’d go for quite neutral colours and finishes which give you the option to swap out particular items like the taps, vanity unit, paint colour etc. The photos you’ve posted are very “in” right now as a trend and therefore likely to date.

I don't like fully tiled bathrooms above a certain size as I think they can look a bit abatoir/ " serial killer torture room", especially if floor also tiled, so I think a mix of tiles and painted walls is the way to go in a room of your size. Of your pictures, I think the green tiles and white paint look better than the other way around, and prefer a plainer floor (porcelain stone look tiles or similar).

Here is mine

That’s one of mine, with tiles up to 1,1 m and higher in the shower part. Walls above are painted light grey and floor is porcelain tiles with terrazzo pattern.

Get mixer taps.

Pfpppl · 01/04/2025 19:28

Of the pictures you've posted I prefer the darker tiles at the bottom and a lighter paint above. I think the room looks brighter that way round.

But if you get bored easily then I agree with a pp that keeping the tiles neutral will make it easier to change it up.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 01/04/2025 23:17

I have marble tiles to half height, then full height in the shower. A light grey lvt floor that has a slight sparkle when the light catches it.
I love colour so the walls are painted a cheerful mid blue. Figured I can repaint easier than retiling so went for classic tiles. That said. I like the dark tiles and white walls in your pictures.

DisruptiveCumin · 02/04/2025 05:30

I was very indecisive on colors and used a bathroom planning tool to play with various combinations 😅Whether you get tired of some particular palette or not depends on whether you liked it just now or if this is something you've always liked! I had a moment where I wanted to have dark floors because I saw someone having those, but then decided not to and I'm happy I didn't!

Borracha · 02/04/2025 05:52

This is our en-suite - we tiled floor to ceiling but used a terrazzo tile in the shower for a bit of colour. We also used it for the top of the units where the sinks are and top of the unit that the toilet is built into.

The floor tiles are a a natural colour and texture (not smooth) which makes them less slippy when wet and I think stops it looking too clinical.

Thanks all for the photos and comments. I think I will stick to white Metro tiles as they allow the greatest flexibility. I can then paint or paper the top half of the walls light or dark. With dark tiles on the bottom, you're pretty much limited to light colours on top. Also, the green tiles I like are about 3 times the price of white metros 😪. The problem is that I have a whole house to renovate 😆.

@CNDflag that is a lovely, classic looking bathroom. Where did you get the sink and toilet - Victorian plumbing?
@PinkCamelias I like this scheme too. Very calming. Where did you buy the black and white border tiles? Looks much nicer than tile trim.

@Fatfreefatballmetro tiles and this black pencil trim are from Vogue Ceramica. The moulding tile is from a Spanish brand, Cevica. They have various models. I don’t know who may sell these brands in the UK (I’m in the EU), but I think it should t be too difficult to find this type of tile.
