hello!
We are about to move and need to have the prehistoric boiler (fed into chimney flue) and water tank (located in a bedroom upstairs) removed and replaced with a new combi boiler. Has anyone done this or similar recently? My guess is its a bigger job than it sounds on the surface but ive had ball parks ranging from £3k to £10k! We are in Surrey. TIA!

We had a new boiler recently with Boxt, they were excellent, pop your details in on there for an idea of cost.

Had ancient system boiler and even older (1970's) hot water tank in upstairs bedroom replaced 18 months ago, included getting rid of cold water tank in attic and new pipework so everything running off the mains, cost just under £5k.

Yeah, had something similar done not long ago – old back boiler and tank out, new combi in. You're right, it's a bigger job than it first sounds, especially with the flue setup and removing the old tank from upstairs.
£3k would be on the very low end and might not include everything – whereas £8–10k sounds like the higher end with top-spec boiler, full system flush, all new pipework, and maybe some additional work like relocating the boiler.
In Surrey, I'd say expect £4.5k–£6.5k for a decent mid-range combi install with old system stripped out properly and everything made good. Just make sure quotes include things like the flue, controls, warranties, and removal of old tanks/pipework.
Get 2–3 detailed quotes if you can, and always go with someone Gas Safe registered. Last time I used this site for it: https://www.local-quotes.co.uk/combiboiler Big job, but once it’s done you’ll be in a much better place with space freed up and a more efficient system.

I’ve just paid 4500. Old boiler and water tank removed and replaced with a combi boiler, a couple of new radiators and some new pipe work. I’m in the north west.

My parents did this about two years ago. Removed gas fire with back boiler, hot water tank and water tank in attic all removed and a combi boiler fitted. Cost 4k.

3 weeks ago we had this done 5k. Boiler was 90s and worked perfectly well. It was in the kitchen chimney (Victorian house) with cylinder (also 90s) in airing cupboard in bedroom above kitchen. Tanks were in loft above same bedroom. New boiler is combi and has gone into airing cupboard because despite having a huge kitchen there is no appropriate wall space for a downstairs boiler.

I advise you get lots of quotes to find a company you are comfortable with. You really don't want someone who won't 'make good' certain elements within reason. Example - one company said they wouldn't remove shelving in airing cupboard to get access or replace seal on bath panel after removing to get access.

Parts of our system were 1970s, we did not have a room thermostat, just a timer dial and radiator thermostats. I honestly had no idea that a combi would not have a pilot light.

The job took 3.5 days. 2 nights without heat or hot water even though he worked long hours.

What the 5 k included - new combi boiler, 1 new radiator, new shower bar, re routing of gas, upgrade of gas pipes, thermostat, removal of some electrics, removal of old boiler, removal of pump yo speed up water, full set up of system and quality assessments of water and so on.

I've heard BOXD are not suitable for the kind of job the OP has in mind

I had pretty much the same work done for the same price - 30 mins from London. A couple quoted £7-7.5k. I paid around £5,050. It took 3 days and I thought they were really good.

if the boiler is really old the pipe to it may not be up to modern standard and they may want to run a new pipe. This can increase the cost very considerably. The lowest quote may not include flushing the system and a less reliable boiler.

Wow - thank you all so much for taking the time and effort to share your experiences. I really really appreciate these replies. I will be armed with this great information when it comes to the work! Will defo get a few quotes.
Thanks for the intel @Springee - will arrange work for summer or to stay with parents during this time! Good to have the details of what the quote included too.
Just hoping we havent bitten off more than we can chew! x
