Bamboo on property survey?

My upstairs neighbour is in the process of getting her flat ready for sale. We each have our own garden attached to the building. She was worried that a bamboo in my garden would affect her sale as she says it would show up on the survey and so I have completely cut down the bamboo and applied a strong poison to kill it off. However, she is still complaining about the bamboo and saying that she wants to get a specialist on etc. I

Is she right to complain? And can she insist that I get a specialist in? I can't really afford to do this and from all the research I've done, my method should work. If I have cut down the bamboo already in my garden, how would a surveyor even know to flag it as an issue?!

Depends what type.of bamboo it is. Clumping bamboo isn't so much of an issue, but spreading bamboo can be a huge one.

People panic about bamboo without even knowing the difference between the types. Clumping (not spreading) is commonly used without any issue.

I planted it 15 years ago and whilst it has sent out a couple of runners, it is mostly growing in a very close circle around the original plant so I believe it is a clumping variety. Can she insist I do more than what I've already done though, just because she doesn't agree with my method of managing it?

I'd say if its clumping variety you've done more than I would have. If it's not in her garden ignore her.

snotathing · 26/03/2025 17:58

You've done more than enough already. I wouldn't have even cut it down. Just explain to her that it's not the spreading type.

Why do you think that your neighbour can tell you what plants to have in your own garden?

She says that the estate agent has said it could show up on a buyer's survey and that could slow down/jeopardise her sale; I don't really see why it should as how would the surveyor know? But I don't want to potentially cause her problems/lose her a sale if it is true

@Lexxie82 I've just bought a property with a small patch of clumping bamboo.
It was noted on the survey, but even as a FTB who was worried about a lot of issues, this didn't read as a problem at all.

I think you've done a lot by even cutting it down.
That's hard work! I've only removed a small bit so far!

How would a surveyor know? Because it’s their job to inspect properties and report on any potential issues. That includes any invasive plant species. They would know what it was as soon as they saw it.
