Cobham/Oxshott?

Hi wise mumsnetters!

We are looking to move from our place in central London further out into Surrey. We are thinking perhaps Oxshott or Cobham as visited both and love them. Does anyone have any insight into them? We regularly commute to Heathrow and Canary Wharf.

The houses look lovely but we just don’t know the area.

Ashtead could be worth looking at, close to the M25 for the Heathrow part and direct trains to Waterloo and London Bridge.

Schools - St Giles and Barnett Wood both considered good infant schools, St Andrews is one of the best state secondary schools in the country but you do need to be catholic to get in. For private, City of London Freemen’s (7-18), Downsend - will be all through and has a good nursery/early years, St John’s and Epsom College both 11+.

To be honest Richmond is really nice, KH is a great school and the commute is much quicker. I would stay where you are for a few more years. We moved from Twickenham to Esher when the dc were prep school age so we knew what type of prep school and secondary schools we were looking for.

How do you find Esher? We just cannot find what we want to buy in Richmond. We want detached with a garden and seems we can only really find that if we go further out eg Cobham. :-(

It's good, we moved a long time ago but you spend a lot more time in the car. I go back to Twickenham and Richmond a lot too, it's not far but too far for a prep school commute. Have you looked at Claygate as it's a village so good for your nanny? Otherwise around Esher station for detached houses and fast trains to London. There is a nursery at Imber Court.

Thank you so so so much for this insight! Is your child happy at the nursery in Cobham? Would you recommend it?

Yes she is, she’s been there for 2 years now and they have been wonderful with her. Nice diverse team and a forest school. Please inbox me if you want more information.

I would also recommend Esher or Claygate. Much easier to walk to a station, and also the K3 bus to take you / nanny / kids to Surbiton or Kingston. There are many, many great schools, both private and state, and loads of common land for walks. Esher High St particularly has loads
of eateries

I should add, loads of kids go on the train to GHS , Tormead or RGS in Guildford and they have a ball.

Ooh I assumed it’s be worse in Windsor though?

It’s way worse in Windsor - planes are landing very close by. Cobham is fine as not in direct landing path and nowhere near landing. I grew up there and still go loads due to parents

your nanny not driving will be a problem anywhere other than somewhere like london or middle of kingston

If you choose Cobham, Danes Hill is a fantastic school for both kids. A school in Richmond would be too far away and a nightmare daily journey, plus friends wouldn’t be local

ThanK you all so much. Have just emailed Danes Hill!
