They are a constant source of worry for myself, dc their friends. One quote was a grand.
How do I make or fit them I've looked on u tube and places.

You can get kits for decking steps, have a quick google. Advice would depend on the number of steps needed and the surfaces from and to. Eg is it from decking down the lawn, or from door to decking? Are the surfaces already level?

Whitelight25 · 22/03/2025 11:53

I really wouldn't. The decking steps I have lived with have become so dangerously slippery after a few months of wet weather I had to have them removed.

Diorchristian · 22/03/2025 12:11

@Whitelight25 what do you mean?

@Whitelight25 what do you mean?

Decking very quickly grows algae which when wet, makes the wood very, very slippery.

It might be worth posting a picture of where you are trying to get from and to.

Then kits will probably be fine. Also you can get non slip strips for the steps that negate the slippery issue in winter. Wet wood is very slippery so you have to either treat it or add non slip material to the treads.

Arghhhhhhh OK

I have to have steps otherwise a substantial jump into garden and a climb back up.

I meant this. It gets lethally slippery in wet weather and very difficult to clean or preserve to keep it safe.

@Whitelight25 oh thanks, we already have them and need them unless there is anther step system we can get, the decking is elevated

I would go for any other type of steps if possible. I have a small patch of decking and it gets really slippery and is quite high maintenance with all the cleaning and treating of the wood. Despite our best efforts, ours has also rotted over time.

b&q do decking step kits but if you search for galvanised outdoor steps you can get premade non slippy ones cheaply too. I guess it depends if you'd rather have smooth steps which may get slippery or metal ones which hurt bare feet.

They are also fairly simple to make yourself if you have any diy experience either from paving slabs with simple brickwork or concreting, or from wooden sleepers with proper sleeper screws (not little standard wood screws)

Thanks everyone to be honest I hadn't considered another type of step I'll look at galvanized steels

It's about a meter high

Have a look at mobile home / caravan steps. I had to get them for my dad as his step from house into the garden was too deep. They come in all shapes and sizes.
