I appreciate the image isn’t the best it’s screenshot off Rightmove. What are those lines in the ceiling?

Probably some boxed in pipes.

Nannyfannybanny · 22/03/2025 07:19

Do you mean the long narrow thing on the wall? Tap it,is it wood, metal. Could be a support beam, does it go through the loft space as well. Flu outlet, pipe cover...can you tell,we do our own surveys!

The faint wiggle on the ceiling could be a cable for the lamp that’s been papered over.

foreverbasil · 22/03/2025 07:23

It’s just a joist. We have one of these in a bedroom. The ceiling tapers down in one corner (which are the lines/shadows)

HellsBalls · 22/03/2025 07:24

As per PP, it’s part of the roof structure.

Sorry not the thing on the wall coming off the ceiling, I knew. The wiggles on the ceiling. They’re all over the ceiling in real life, bubbles too

Cracks in the plaster. Possibly underneath wallpaper/lining paper. It’s an attic room so maybe due to a leak?

They are marks where the plaster has cracked, someone has filled the cracks (not especially well) with something like polyfiller and then painted over them. There could have been a leak but it could just be that the plaster might be old/ the house has moved a bit.

If the ceiling is dry and they have been the same for a while you could get the whole thing replastered if it bothers you.

Looks like plaster cracks. We had them in every room in our house. It's built on clay so the house shifts a bit in hot dry summers. It's nothing structural to worry about if it is that, but cost us about 1k per room to have the ceiling skimmed and replastered.

HellsBalls · 22/03/2025 08:26

Probably the original plaster and lathe ceiling. You could pull it down, insulate whilst leaving space for ventilation under the eaves, plasterboard and skim.

Thanks all !

Pull it down and insulate!!! That is major work, hugely expensive. We had a social housing property, similar, lath and plaster, sloping ceilings like this.Double glazing was installed, the whole ceiling was crazed by them, then really badly replastered.. either leave it alone, learn to live with the quirks or use proper lime plaster.
