How much do decorator's cost

Thinking of putting a lick of paint downstairs to brighten it up before going back on the market. The area is about 40 sq. metres. Walls, ceilings and all woodwork including windows would need doing. How much should I expect to pay for that? I usually do all the decorating myself, but I've had knee surgery a while back and don't fancy my chances on the ladder!

I guess it will depend on the area, but usually about £150-£200 a day plus materials.

BIWI · 19/03/2025 09:45

It’s impossible to say! Will depend on specific requirements as well as where you live.

Why not put a request on Check-a-trade and ask for quotes? Far better than asking random Mumsnetters.

LadyDanburysHat · 19/03/2025 09:49

My decorator charges £200 per day plus materials.

TY78910 · 19/03/2025 09:54

£200-250 daily rate. You'd be surprised how long 'just a lick of paint' takes. All the prep work takes ages before they actually start painting.

Figuringitout9 · 19/03/2025 10:57

Ours worked out at £200 per day, he supplied paint for ceilings and woodwork, we just supplied paint for walls

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 19/03/2025 16:15

We paid about £1000 for hallway and landings up two fights of stairs one large bedroom and one bathroom ( including woodwork) Northwest.

Maitri108 · 19/03/2025 16:18

I had a quote for my kitchen which obviously has little wall due to cabinets and worktops. It was £600.

Gcn · 19/03/2025 16:20

We've paid just over £2k for living room, hall stairs and landing, lots of doors. About 10 days work

KittenPause · 19/03/2025 16:22

Ha I think my decorator made an error with his quote which I thought was insanely high so have just ignored it - I’ve just emailed him to double check because I know he probably sent it in a rush without double checking

KittenPause · 19/03/2025 17:26

nope turns out his quote was correct. It was outstandingly high

We recently paid £10K for four weeks’ work (2 men). If you want it done on the cheap you can explain what you want and ask for minimal prep (this is the bit that takes time)- the finish won’t be as good. Not all painters will do this though as it’s basically asking for a bad job.

DancingLions · 19/03/2025 17:41

People always say this, that the finish isn't as good. My mum always uses decorators and my sister does her own (with very minimal prep) and I genuinely can't see a difference.

But then I also can't tell the difference between farrow & ball and dulux!

But yes it costs £££. Crazy amounts of money imo.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2025 17:46

We’ve recently had a painter in, I think he was around £200 per day. He made pretty short work of the ceiling and walls, it was the woodwork which took the time - it included nearly all the doors and the bannisters.

rubberduck68 · 20/03/2025 09:06

That gives me a rough idea, thanks. I've a couple dropping by this week to take a look. I do have a lot of woodwork so I expect that's going to up the price!
