Ideas for improving kitchen floor tiles?

We are saving to essentially rip out the kitchen in our new house and put a new one in, as it’s not been looked after by the previous owners.

This will likely be next year. So in the meantime we want to do a temporary fix to the floor, which are dark grey tiles (which are really awful… looks like tiles you’d use in a garage) that are uneven / cracked in one area in particular which makes it wobbly / uneven.

I was thinking of a vinyl floor to stick over the tiles but not sure this would actually work on the uneven area!

Does anyone have any ideas??

If it’s only for a year or so, I’d paint them. Rustoleum make a floor tile paint which can deal with trafficked areas, and as long as you prep properly and then seal with a proper floor sealant afterwards it will hold up. The cracked tile shouldn’t be too difficult to sort out, if you’re careful to lift it and use an S2 adhesive like Ultra or BAL flex, which flexes with a level of movement if the subfloor is a little uneven.

Vinyl over an uneven surface is likely to crease and crack. You could try it, but cheap sheet vinyl rarely looks great, and you probably don’t want to spend a lot for a temporary fix.
