We got the keys this weekend and lots has been left behind that we weren't expecting. They said they were taking light fixtures, curtains, appliances etc so I've bought all new and they've left theirs. Most of mine are now out of returns window annoyingly. The washer and dryer they've left aren't in the best condition but I can't get them to the tip!

Is it even worth me flagging to solicitor?

The house is clean, bar a few missed bits and the house is generally as expected so not sure if I'm letting moving stress make me irrational.

If its in the fixtures and fitting that they weren't suppose to be left then it might be worth getting the solicitor to contact them, they should be liable for the cost to remove them.

I wouldn't bother over light fixtures (their needs to be something provided for safety) or curtains (just give them to charity or recycle) really but they shouldn't be dumping appliances they don't want and its not your job to foot that bill.

If you have Facebook put the washer dryer on there , on market place or even free cycle someone will snap it up or contact a scrap man if they ain’t any good .
If you’re happy generally I would count myself lucky compared to some people you see online who upload videos of absolute shit holes .

Enjoy your new home .

We had this with our current house, they left fully furnished rooms, wardrobes full of rubbish. I spoke to our solicitor and they sent an email to the seller's solicitors. We asked them to arrange to have the rubbish cleared within 48 hours or we would arrange it ourselves and invoice them. They were quick to get on their client's case and house clearer turned up the next day to clear all the crap i'd thrown in the garden in fury!

Bang it all on Facebook Marketplace - buyer collects - £50 each for the appliances….

Light fittings - an electrician will take these down - sometimes electricians will take these away…. If not you’ll have to take to the tip.

Curtains sling in the bin if you don’t want them…

It’s not worth the hassle of going through solicitors for small amounts….. if it’s a house full then that is totally different!!

Market place or free cycle

londongirl12 · 16/03/2025 19:10

Either put them on facebay or just put them outside, the scrap men will soon be round to take them.

ClaredeBear · 16/03/2025 19:11

Scrappy will take an old washer.

WonkyDonkeyWonkeyDonkey · 16/03/2025 19:18

Yea, put the appliances on Facebook or ask a scrap man to get them. With the other things they probably just decided itbwas easier for them to leave them. You aren’t allowed to leave wires and you are supposed to fill holes if you take the curtain poles etc.

We've also just discovered a big stain on the worktop in the utility. It was covered with jars of washing powder during the viewing. Guessing there's little I can do about that either, as it's their word against mine that it was there before?

It's easily covered up with an appliance, but annoying all the same.

Put the appliance's on FB market place/ Freecycle/ gumtree for cheap, buyer to collect. They will be gone in a couple of days. Then either do the same with the curtains or donate to charity. We have a local charity that sets DV victims/ homeless/ people in severe hardship up in their homes and they pretty much take everything. I sent all our curtains the previous owners left to them. They also accepted a microwave and the plug in electric heaters the previous owners left us in the loft.

Our previous owners left loads behind. It was an ex rental and the owner tried to say it was all the old tennants stuff. Been young, naive first time buyers we didn't realise you could ask for stuff to be removed. I pretty much moved everything on using FB marketplace or our local charity who were more than happy to take small appliances, hoovers, pans, electric heaters, plug in oil radiators, clothes airers ect.
