Popcorn Ceiling - to go or not?!

We have scheduled removal of the downstairs popcorn ceiling (no asbestos) for cosmetic reasons but are now considering moving in the next year. Would you still go ahead or just leave it? Do you think buyers care? Any impact on sell ability?

What do you mean by removal? Can you not just have it skimmed?

Whether it will bother buyers depends a bit on the condition of the rest of your house - it’s hard to answer without context.

Yes skimmed. The rest of the house has been upgraded to modern incl windows, internal doors, kitchen, hard flooring etc

Obviously if it came down to choice between a house with a popcorn ceiling and one without, people would go for without. There are lots of people who would be critical about the rest of your house, because the ceiling put them off.

Skim it.

I'd see it as a nuisance that had to be done before I could move in, if you left it.

I am not a fan, but still I went to (try and) buy a house with popcorn ceiling, because the rest of it I really liked and it was just for me, so I didn't let this put me off. It's not even a priority to change once I move (I don't even yet know if there's asbestos in it), but at some point I'll get it skimmed if possible, yes. My hopefully-soon-to-be house also has been modernised in a few rooms (kitchen, bathroom), and that's one of the reasons why I said that I could live with the popcorn ceiling and deal with it myself at a later stage. I'd say new doors, windows and kitchen are more important!

I guess it depends on how many houses similar to yours get up for sale in your area. If others are similar and modernised PLUS with modern ceilings, then yes you might get solid competition. But the house I found was different from the others, so something like that didn't lead me to walk away, because it's bearable! Hope this helps.
