First time ever to market and built by its current owner....how could it be updated but still retaining the features and charm of the 1960s?!

For me it's like the space, the size of the rooms and the spacing of the windows.

I'm not going to be buying it, just came across it in my search for potential homes in Birmingham. Also it's above budget.

I've heard good things about Barnt Green though.

I also love the stand the TV is on.

I grew up in a late sixties/early seventies style house and hated it back then. Now many years later I totally appreciate the space and light and how practical the square boxy rooms and clean lines were. The outside can be easily updated with wood cladding if you want to and several houses near me have done that.
I think this is a great house but personally wouldn’t want to fill it with sixties style I like houses that change over the decades not try and hold on.

I agree about the space & light.

I like that it has so much square footage for a house that’s “only” 4 beds.

These days a lot of houses that big would have been converted into 5 beds but it’s lovely that each room has generous proportions.

I always think self builds are so interesting because people build to suit their own lifestyle. So there's the 60s priorities: living room and dining room are one room then there's the hatch to the small kitchen but a good sized laundry room so there's inside hanging space. Bathroom to bedroom ratio is sensible and both bathrooms have the high windows so you have privacy but can still air the room by opening the window. Looks like there is a warm air heating system so no radiators using up wall space. Even the garden is in period.

It would be very easy to modernise looks wise but you'd probably need to completely rewire and add a ton of insulation and update the heating system. Layout wise stick a wall between the living room and dining room, and remove the wall between kitchen and dining room. Put in an Uncommon Projects kitchen, lux up the bathrooms to 21st century requirements, keep the beautiful MCM wooden shelving systems in the sitting room and study, update the soft furnishings and add some colour.

I love it. It could be totally amazing with a bit of updating

TheNinthLock · 09/03/2025 10:14

I absolutely love it - I grew up in a very similar house (but smaller)

For me, that build style calls for wood floor, white walls and then soft furnishings in shades of brown and orange. Very 70's. I'd buy that house in a heartbeat (sadly twice my budget)

It’s alright. Nice garden.

But was expecting more than that for a mil on the edge of Brum. Many nicer places I’d choose to be for that kind of cash- it’s very near to the M42 and will probably suffer from motorway noise. Plus it needs quite a bit of £££ thrown at it before it’s up to date.

I’ll pass too.

Edited

There is no motorway noise in that road, we know people that live there.

And it’s a very posh village, not a suburb of Birmingham.

I love it so much. I wouldn’t want to live in that part of the country but if you could move it to North Yorkshire then yes please!

HellsBalls · 09/03/2025 11:56

No EPC, warm air heating, super thin walls. Well overpriced considering what needs doing to it.

Well this is a marmite house!
It's a big no from me and gives me a really uncomfortable feeling. Maybe because it's giving me a clockwork orange house vibes.

I feel the same , i hate 'big glass box' type houses ,i especially dislike the high narrow window in the bathroom.
Nice garden though.

Ketzele · 09/03/2025 12:40

It's lovely.

Papyrophile · 09/03/2025 15:58

I like the interiors, especially the hall entry, but would be prettifying the exterior. Fantastic garden. Sadly neither in an area we want to live, nor within the downsize budget. The house we shall sell is similar but more up to date and with a better view. Probably needs work on wiring and plumbing, heating and insulation to reach a modern spec, so that's also quite expensive. Guessing that the vendors may have to consider offers.
