So me and my partner are purchasing a new home. I'm a ftb but this is my husband's second home. Mortgage got approved and now we're dealing with the solicitor. Solicitor is asking us where £20,000 came from which came from my husband I'm actually not contributing anything towards this house it's all my husband. But it's still asking me the question and I have no idea what to put in it (it's on an app). Does it matter that I'm not contributing anything? Do I just put it came from my husband?

Just put husband's savings/bonus/wherever its coming from

They’re asking to check it’s not the proceeds of crime or someone else’s money in case they later have a claim on the property.

Will you both be on the mortgage?

They don't care which of you are paying, it's just part of the anti money laundering rules. If he saved it from salary / bonuses then put that.

Just tell the truth!

If it's in your account and your husband gave it to you, they will also check his account to see the transaction to you. And that Is perfectly acceptable

Just put it came from your husband. It won’t matter to them that you aren’t contributing anything financially to the deposit.

So when I put that, the next page asks me to link a bank account to it that contains the funds. This form has taken me over an hour to do and I'm not even halfway through. My partner has his own form to complete which he's already linked his bank account. What am I supposed to do in this situation?

You personally are not providing the funds, he is, so I wouldn't have thought you should be putting it on your copy. I am very much not an expert in such matters though. Perhaps you need to speak to the solicitor and ask for their guidance in completing the form.

I would link his bank account or if unsure, phone your solicitor for advice re their form.

Put the account where the funds are currently held. Be it yours or your husbands account.
This whole exercise is to prove the build up of funds. Ie how you/dh came to acquire them. To check there has been no money laundering.
They will pay particular attention to 'cash deposits' which need to be traceable.
Your dh gave you 20k. So that is in your account. It came from dh account, so link it to his account number so they can see the transaction. They will be looking at how he got the 20k. Ie salary, savings etc or whether he also made a cash deposit to his own account.
They are very particular on these checks. I had to explain every deposit over 1k for a whole year.
Complete ball ache but unfortunately it has to be done.
