AIBU about the cost of patio cleaning?

Widowed disabled pensioner here.

I have a flat roof terrace 3m x 3m and a ground floor patio about twice that size. They were both filthy and covered in horrible green algae and mould.

A roofing company advertised that they clean these things using high pressure water and biocides to kill the algae and mould so I contacted them. They have good reviews online.

When they came to quote they told me £450 for two men, one-and-a-half days. I calculated that if they worked, say, 7 hours a day and 3.5 hours on the half day, that's 10.5 hours x two men = 21 hours. So, just over £20 per hour per man. As that covered the cost of their equipment and the chemicals it seemed fair.

I should point out at this point that I live in a small, poor town where house-cleaners charge about £12.50 to £15 ph and handymen about £20 ph.

However, on the day they were finished after just six hours. I heard the hose going for only about 4 hours of that time. Each time I happened to go into my kitchen I saw them sitting on my patio furniture scrolling on their mobile phones.

Also I thought they were going to use some kind of expensive specialist industry biocide chemicals but they just used Patio Magic, that you can buy anywhere.

When they left, because I had agreed their price of £450, I had no choice but to pay it, but ever since they left I feel cheated. I mean, I only agreed to that price because I thought it was going to be 20 man-hours of work. Now I think they knew darned well it was only going to take them 4 or 5 hours but TOLD ME it would be one-and-a-half days to justify the £450.

Today they contacted me saying that they have put photos of the job online and they want me to join the thread and praise them. I am a bit scared of them, and I don't want to upset them but then again I feel cheated.

Am I being unreasonable? Or have I been "had"?

I’d say that was a pretty average going rate.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/03/2025 16:26

(Do you have any relatives who could do it for you going forward, if you hire a pressure washer?

Newgirls · 06/03/2025 16:27

It was a days work so £200 each plus equipment etc.

OK it’s not great value but not outrageous either. Enjoy your clean patio

spottedinthewilds · 06/03/2025 16:27

The going rate per hour isn't a problem, but yes they took you for a fool. It's a 3 hour job max.

notgettinganyyounger · 06/03/2025 16:27

I think you were ripped off, it does sound like an awful lot of money for 4 hours jet washing with a cheap product.

spottedinthewilds · 06/03/2025 16:29

I had the whole outside of my house soft washed, took about 4/5 hours and cost £280.

They are coming back to do all my paths and patios, charging £265.

Addictforanex · 06/03/2025 16:39

My maths isn’t great - but is that about 30 square meters jet washed and treated with patio magic? Am amazed they tried to say that was a 20 man hour job. Sorry OP. You could have had some come back by saying - “are you going to re cost the job since you didn’t need the time you first estimated”? But beyond that - yes lesson learned.

Don’t feel bullied into praising them on social media if in reality you wouldn’t recommend them.

SingleHouseholder · 06/03/2025 16:44

Thanks for the replies so far. I feel an absolute fool now - yet again. I seem to be taken advantage of by most of the workmen I have hired since being on my own.

I DEEPLY regret paying them now. I should have said well £450 was fair for 20 man hours but not for the 8 hours you have actually done.

I have paid these men £100 an hour, haven't it? That is more than I paid the senior consultant at the private hospital for an arthritic knee injection!

You could reply to their request for a good review and say ‘as it took you much less time than you originally quoted I think the price was very high. On that basis I can’t recommend you to others.’

SingleHouseholder · 06/03/2025 16:55

OMG I have told them. I actually feel scared of them, and that's not right.

OP posts:
MrsSkylerWhite · 06/03/2025 16:57

Do you have any forthright relatives who can talk to them? You certainly shouldn’t be feeling scared.

Newgirls · 06/03/2025 17:01

Well done op. Don’t be scared. One bad review from you on social media would damage them. As long as you have been polite don’t worry.

SingleHouseholder · 06/03/2025 17:04

I just looked on Checkatrade and they have 7 reviews with an overall 9.74 rating!

Everyone things they are wonderful!

Must be me then!

I have no children or any other relations, no. Precious few friends and none that live close. I have messaged the firm and said that, although they worked hard and did a good job, I only agreed to £450 because they told me it would be 1.5 days work for 2 men. I said I feel a bit cheated.

After the fact - but never believe reviews on a paid-for-site.

Overtheatlantic · 06/03/2025 17:12

We use a jet wash, cost around £70.

I didn't look at their Checkatrade page until just now. I was going on reviews posted on a neighbourhood site.

Thing is they DID do a good job. That isn't my issue.

OK but I don't think 4 hours is a day's work.

I actually own a pressure washer but not able to use it myself anymore. No, if I had any relatives or friends who would/could do this job I would not have hired these men. They took half my month's pension!

I’ve just had my large patio (50 sq m) and my driveway (probably about the same) jet washed from £200. It was filthy too. North of England. No chemicals needs despite its state. One man did it on one day.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/03/2025 17:31

How much difference between the promised product (industrial biocide) and the Patio Magic?
If they said you didn't need the industrial strength then they should've said and changed the price accordingly .

SingleHouseholder · 06/03/2025 17:43

Is there any point in me spending time and effort writing a review on Checkatrade if they are able to get any review they don't like removed?

I don't know. They didnt promise any specific product they just said "we use a chemical" and that I had to keep my cat away from it for 5 hours.

Patio Magic you do have to keep pets off for 5 hours, the price of this in Tesco is on offer at £16, (last year it was £8), on Amazon it’s £20 per tub, I should think they used at least 3/4 tubs.
