Should I knock down the wall between my kitchen and dining room?

My kitchen is approx 10'x 10' and the dining room is approx 11' x 8'. I'm thinking about having a new kitchen and can't decide whether or not to knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room and create one larger room. I haven't got room for a table in my kitchen at the moment and do think it would be nice to have a larger family room. But would I regret losing a separate dining room?

Has anyone else done this? Any advice? Would it make any difference to the value of my house to lose a room (not that I'm thinking of selling for a long long time)?

do it. And while you are at it do it properly - it's going to be a messy job but you will never use another room in the house once you've done it, so don't compromise on lighting/electrics/plumbing. If it overlooks the garden then replace the window with french doors. Put in about 50% more power points than you think could possibly ever be necessary.

When my parents were trying to sell their house a lot of buyers were put off by the fact that despite the kitchen being quite large, the layout meant you couldn't eat in it, and the dining room was separate. So on that basis i'd say go for it.

Hi..we're having it done as I write this. Our separate dining room was just a dumping ground but the original galley kitchen wasn't big enough for a table so we're knocking down the dining room wall (well, taking it back as a little bit needs to stay as a support wall; knocking down the exterior galley kitchen wall (RSJ already in there now); and building a pitched roof space over the yard. At the end, we'll have an L-shaped room, but it'll have French doors opening onto the outside, 2 velux windows and another window over the sink so loads more light. Ask me anything you want.
