How did you find your loft extension?

Assuming you're a family with some paid childcare, two incomes, ideally living in London - how did you pay for your loft extension? There's 4 of them going on on our street (classic 3-bed Victorian terraces). We'd like more space but unclear what the best way to pay for a £100k loft is. Did you all have loads of savings or add it to your mortgage?

Add to mortgage

We did ours 11 years ago and it only cost £40K (1930s house). Bathroom fixtures were on top but everything else - electrics, plumbing etc. were included. Prices have gone up a lot I guess. We are also in London.

We extended the mortgage when it was up for renewal. Worth every penny as we got a lovely big bedroom and decent bathroom out of it. It's my favourite room in the house as it gets so much light from the Velux windows.

We extended our mortgage to do ours. SE London, cost 75k all in 2 years ago.

Thanks everyone. We are getting quotes from £90,000 and that’s before the bathroom through fittings. Our neighbours spent £120,000 which included an air-conditioning unit and the redecoration of the main hallway and landing. Not a big house, a small basic Victorian terrace like you see everywhere. Well done on getting it done before the prices rocketed! I did wonder how an earth people seem to afford them

We had saved for ours but Dh owns a building company and his business partner was having some work done to his house too so they both agreed to take some money out of the business (their profits!!!) to put towards it and we topped up the rest. Due to the nature of the business and what dh does we got a bit of a bargain really. He did small amounts himself and of course it wasn’t done in the timeframe 😂 but it was all fine.
i think mostly people do remortgage.

We remortgaged and a loan. Costs at the end of the project worked out about £2500 per sqm. This does include finishes like bathrooms, paint and carpets.

Inheritance. We’re in south, paid less than half what you’ve been quoted a few years ago. We were really fortunate though that the company stuck to their pre covid quote.
