Relaxed Roman blinds and a very big window?

Do you have flat/relaxed linen Roman blinds? Do they work on big windows, and when they have to be functional, not just left unrolled permanently? I'm thinking about the blinds like on the attached photos. My window is very big, 150 cm wide and more than 3 m tall, but the surface to cover would be around 2 m long (the bottom is wood, it's a French door). I don't really like the normal Roman blinds with horizontal lines.

I have blackout curtains but I need a sort of privacy cover too, so I want linen voile, and if possible would have these relaxed blinds instead of another layer of curtains.

We have several very large south facing windows that are nine feet wide and it's really difficult finding blinds. We opted for some UV roller blinds but had to have them made in a set of three. They are very good because they are semi translucent (Google Transitions blinds fabrics) but it didn't work out cheap, as they had to be custom made.

Thank you! I do consider roller blinds (I have them on other windows, though more opaque) but for this window I'd prefer something softer and more unstructured. Indeed, any covering for such a big window is going to be expensive, so I need to choose well!

I have made numerous blinds and curtains for lots of personal homes and think the soft linen kind you desire are the most beautiful. Linen does wrinkle, but this adds to the softness and natural look. Linen looks best with a similar weight self lining. I think 1.5m width is perfectly fine for this style.

Thank you very much @Whataretalkingabout ! I read that the relaxed blinds need to be trained to fold properly. I suppose I will have to ask the shop if they do it?

With the width of 150 cm, shall I expect 2 or 3 rows of rings ? That would matter for the way the bottom looks, I guess.

My window has a fixed part at the top, so this is where the blonde pulled up would stay when the window is open. The reason I hesitate is that the window opens inwards, so in summer the blind would need to be up often. The linen voile curtains would work better in this regard.

It's not what you asked, but I made some beautiful curtains out of muslin for my big windows, they were lovely and a nicer texture than voile ❤️

@PrincessofWells I think that linen voile is effectively muslin! What are yours made of? If I get light/not opaque curtains, they will be linen, definitely not polyester voile.

@PinkCamelias Ah, that's quite likely! I got mine from our local fabric shop, a few years ago now. Definitely cotton muslin. Linen would also work but may not have the same drape as in muslin, but better for blinds I think.

Muslin (made from cotton ) is less expensive than linen. It used to be dirt cheap, however it is an excellent lightweight fabric, also for clothes. Voile, is a type of weave and can even be made of silk or wool! Muslin is not as sturdy as linen, it doesn't wrinkle in the attractive way linen does.

@PinkCamelias 3 rows will look better than 2, especially in your width of 150cm. As for training, you can do that yourself , by finger creasing once your blind is in place, so it will look the way you want it.

Thank you very much for your advice @Whataretalkingabout !
The fabric is called linen muslin or voile by the shops, it doesn't seem to be consistent. It's this airy, transparent weave. I have, however, noticed that the relaxed blind on my photo above is not made from this lightest linen, but from medium weight (140 g/m) fabric. I will ask if they can make them in muslin too. Otherwise it would need to be a muslin curtain - actually, I like both the look of layered linen curtains, muslin + another, slightly heavier, with tiebacks - and also the relaxed blind layered with linen curtains, so I am finding it hard to choose :)

@PinkCamelias , I recommend going with all linen fabrics since you are having them made. They will last longer; cotton muslin is rather delicate and a bit flimsy for shades that will be raised and lowered daily. But do listen to your own heart. ♥

PinkCamelias · 04/03/2025 11:28

Yes yes, linen all the way! When I say muslin I mean what these shops refer to as linen muslin, the lightest fabric.
