Relocating Devon to Bath - recommendations please!

Me and hubby are thinking of relocating to Bath, we've visited there before and often talk about how much we'd love to live there. We currently live in a rough area in Devon and feeling really unhappy here. We're looking at towns surrounding as we like to live in quieter places but be able to get into a city for days out etc.

We have 2 DDs aged 4 and 3, our current area is really isolating for shopping, live music, secondary schools not great! I feel being close to Bath and with Bristol not too far, our children will have much better teen/young adult years. I grew up in London till I was 25 and it's too busy and expensive for me now but I had a great childhood and experienced so much! Also at just over a 2 hour drive, Bath doesn't feel so much like we're too far away from family (in Devon).

Please let me know thoughts on areas! I really love Bradford-on-avon but it is pricey, hence I was looking at Trowbridge as its more affordable as we will buy our first home and hoping to move to a forever home in Bradford-on-avon without moving too far. I've also heard it's not the best area there but budget wise we need to start low!

Work wise (if it helps!), I am a registered nurse, hubby a driving instructor.

We're heading up in Easter to check out areas so please drop some suggestions!
If you relocated up that way yourself, how do/did you find it? Did you stay? I have seen some older posts of the same nature, but keen to hear some updated recs!

What about Cheltenham? Further north but decent rail links, niceish architecture, culture, access to cotswolds, some areas of poverty but many nice areas too plus surrounding villages. On m5 for trips back home.

Hi @KennedyD22! I know this post is a few months old but we are also moving from Devon, we have searched high and low for somewhere but never had any luck. We’ve opted to rent for a year or two and then revisit the situation as due to work commitments we didn’t have much time to get sorted. Did you end up relocating and if you don’t mind sharing where did you settle on?

Hi! We actually decided to stick around in Devon for now, whilst our kids are still primary school age as we were worried about the lack of support from family near by. It’s not off the table for us though, postponed for now.

sorry to hear you’re struggling finding somewhere! Is that you’ve struggled to find somewhere to buy?! Where are you settling to rent? I liked Bradford on Avon best but it was out of our budget as first time buyers. We’re buying here in Devon for now as it’s cheaper and perhaps may afford BoA in future.

Thank you for replying. Aw that’s a shame, but I totally understand. At least it is only postponed for now.

Yes we really struggled to find somewhere to buy(this could have something to do with me not being overly keen to relocate so nothing ticked the boxes😂. My partners job involves lots of moving around). The plan was to sale up here and buy in Bath. But the budget did not allow for what we are needing/looking for!

We’re renting a property in Trowbridge - we visited Trowbridge when we first began our search and it was an instant no from me. Reading these comments have sent my mind in to overdrive that’s for sure, I have an almost 13 year old who I am regrettably having to up haul and while he was at the forefront of my mind the whole time we were searching, time was running out and we had to find somewhere so that’s where we have landed (temporarily). I’m now eyeballs deep in research on secondary schools and I am going to try my luck at school outside of our catchment area 🤞🏼!

A good plan! Fingers crossed for a future move to BoA for you and your family.

We live in Bath, for anyone wanting a bit more affordable but easy access to Bath I always suggest Corsham or Frome- both nice. At a push Chippenham ( not amazing but great rail connections and only 12 minutes to Bath on train) - a lot of newer developments
