Builder has asked me to confirm by Monday but have no idea at all. Any wisdom gratefully appreciated

I suppose the question to be asked is what you are converting it into? If a bedroom you’ll need to take into account where the bed will be for bedside lamps. If a living room, you’ll don’t want to be pulling out the sofa every time you need to plug in the hoover.

bluesatin · 01/03/2025 16:22

Depends what you are converting it into... a kitchen? A sauna?

warmbath · 01/03/2025 16:24

Sorry, it will be a bedroom and en-suite for our teenage son.

Sketch out where the furniture is going and work it out from there. Add some on most corners for luck. Put in far more than you think will be needed and consider the ones with usb/type c slots as well as three pin plugs.

RustyBear · 01/03/2025 16:25

What is it going to be used for?
Always put in more than you think you need, to give you flexibility in moving furniture- put in double sockets if you can. We have (I think) 26 sockets in our kitchen; they have all been used, but not all at the same time, as I like to move stuff like kettle, toaster, air fryer, microwave etc from time to time.
Don’t put them where they will be behind the logical place to put furniture.
Think about whether floor sockets would be useful.

RustyBear · 01/03/2025 16:27

Think about sockets that incorporate usb sockets, though wireless charging may replace usb in many instances.

Geneticsbunny · 01/03/2025 16:32

Double socket in each corner and then maybe extra ones of there are any floating bits of wall, e.g. between doors and extra where the bedside tables will be.

HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow · 01/03/2025 16:38

Put in more than you think. Some on every sensible wall. Make sure there are several near where the bed and desk are likely to go

Catname · 01/03/2025 16:40

Where will his bed go (lamps/chargers)
Where will a desk go (computer, monitor, printer, laptop, lamp, charger etc)
Where will a tv go (games console, soundbar, dvd player, ariel there too)
Where will there be a mirror (for a hairdryer)
Shaving socket/electric toothbrush in the bathroom
Convenient socket for hoover
plus more for luck and anything else 😊

You don’t mention lighting but two way switches at the door and bed are useful
Low level motion activated light in the bathroom is useful overnight
Wall light where any mirror will be in addition to ceiling light

ThirdStorm · 01/03/2025 16:42

My advice is to put in more than you need or you’ll end up with a 4 way in each socket! I have so many electrical items these days!

olderbutwiser · 01/03/2025 16:42

Oh heck, a teenage son? Definitely do a layout and put in gazillions.

warmbath · 01/03/2025 16:43

This was just what I was looking for, thank you all, most helpful! Esp the phone charging points, absolutely essential for teenagers! Why did it not ever occur to em 🙈

Put sockets either side of where the bed will go and at least. one on each of the other walls. Make them all double sockets with integrated usb chargers.

JimHalpertsWife · 01/03/2025 16:44

Pick all possible bed locations and add a double socket with USB to the right and left of each option.

Put at least a single socket by the bedroom door for vacuum.

Hottoffeesauce · 01/03/2025 16:49

Toothbrush charging point in ensuite too.

JimHalpertsWife · 01/03/2025 18:33

If he has a TV, a wall mounted aerial and socket in the appropriate places.

Negroany · 01/03/2025 19:07

Never use any single sockets, if you're getting the wiring done always go for doubles.
Leave no wall unsocketed! I had a wall in my living room with no socket on, madness. When I had some other work done I got one added and now I can have a lamp on the sideboard.

So, at least two doubles per wall I'd say.

JohnofWessex · 01/03/2025 21:04

What about height, 'table top' is much easier to use especially by bedside cabinet desks etc

BooomShakeTheRoom · 01/03/2025 22:07

I would include;

Bedside tables - put enough each side for lights, chargers, so 4 gang each side.

Socket or two placed where a desk/dressing table could be positioned - again 4 gang (or two each side) For laptop charger, screen, hoover etc.

If in doubt, put too many rather than too few.

Have you thought about using the face plates that allow you to charge via USB? They’re great! You can charge so much at the same time!

Cleardays · 02/03/2025 07:10

If you are in UK, do you mind me asking how much it is costing? H wants to do similar claiming it will ‘not cost much’.

And whereabouts in UK are you roughly? (London/ NE/ SE etc)

Thanks!

WildCountry · 04/03/2025 13:00

I got 4 double sockets in my garage conversion but wish I'd got 5.

WildCountry · 04/03/2025 13:01

Oh, total cost of conversion was £10k in Yorkshire
