House hunting in Woking

My DH and I are looking to move to Woking having considered prices, commuting distance to London and motorway connections. We haven’t been to the area before and therefore wanted to narrow down the good areas so that we don’t waste time booking in house viewings in dodgy areas (particularly as we can only visit on weekends). Any suggestions would be great. For info we have got one viewing near Goldsworth Park and not sure if that is the side we should be looking at.

What’s your budget and what are you looking for?
We’re in Horsell, it’s a great area. Village shops are excellent and practical, easy to walk into Woking and the station, schools great.

Tbh you need to just come and look around a few areas to get a feel for them before narrowing down too much on what people say. But if you share budget etc first we can help a bit more first. Traffic is terrible at the moment, loads of roadworks, but it will improve.

Goldsworth Park is a massive area and parts of it are definitely tired.
Horsell is more expensive, but better and has a village feel with most things you’d need, whilst being close to the town centre for the station.

Hook Heath is very expensive. Villages like Bisley and West End are fine, but further out, so you’d have to factor in costs to the station.

@Talipesmum our budget is up to £700k and we’re looking for a 3 bed semi ideally with driveway and walking distance to Woking station. I’d like a house that doesn’t need much work doing as we don’t have budget for extensive house projects. I’ve heard Horsell is nice. We’re viewing a house tomorrow so will drive around the area. Any areas to avoid do you reckon? Thanks!

@Housemove2025

look at old Woking Gresham mill.

@Housemove2025

presses done too soon.

i lived there and it is lovely and safe and loads of share parkland/ gardens and walks directly from there.

you don’t hear neighbours and the town house some have gardens and others roof gardens and patios and balconies with access to green areas.

Given A320 Victoria Way, and also Goldsworth Road are both closed at the moment, I'm sure you'll see a lot of Woking as you drive slowly around on the diversion routes! There's also roadworks on the A320 from the M25, and the M3/A322 roundabout is shut for the weekend.

Yeah definitely check the traffic before you set off - loads of roadworks at the moment. It’s not the easiest town to drive around - there’s a big road / canal going east-west over the north of the town and Horsell / Goldsworth park are to the north of it. In the town it can take 15 mins to drive round something that might be a 5-10 minute walk at the moment. So figure out the areas you’re interested in checking out, park up in each and wander around.

The Horsell house on Meadway is nice. Those houses are quite small though they look larger from the outside - rooms are little. But they’re good houses and have drives. There’s a few end terraces too. You might struggle for all the things you’re after within budget but go and have a look round. A lot depends on if you need schools or not as well.

Housemove2025 · 28/02/2025 12:14

Ahh hadn’t even checked routes yet! Thanks for the heads up on traffic and diversions. Will be sure to set off early!

Nice things we like about it here:
Horsell common / Chobham common/ Surrey hills and other green areas close by. (Kids do scouts and often they are playing massive hide and seek games among the trees for the evening).
Train line excellent.
Usually easy for me to get out to work on roads, though it’s going to be a bit trying for a while now I think.
Leisure centres / pools / playgrounds
Love Horsell village with great shops - v friendly, useful, local
Our schools have been excellent
Pubs often very good. Restaurants used to be abysmal but they’re pretty decent now with lots of variation (if you’re coming out from London though it’s going to not be as much choice as you’re used to!).
I shop in Guildford for interesting pretty things but in Woking for day to day stuff. Lots of the town centre v accessible for mobility issues. Excellent library.
Lots of good sports clubs and stuff for kids.
Easy to get onto motorway and off to see relatives (though current roadworks).
Theatre, cinema (newly done out), art gallery (fingers xd it stays)

Plenty of downsides too - it’s not a hugely pretty town, plenty of closed down shops in some of the shopping centres, council massively overspent and we are still feeling the outcomes of that. Roadworks everywhere at the moment. But for us it’s a good balance of what we need.

Have friends that have lived in Woking for many years so feel that must be happy there. Family go to the theatre there a lot and like the theatre.

Given your budget, you might be more likely to find what you want a couple of stops down the line in Farnborough.
