WWYD Neighbour’s Parents blocking street parking

OneCyanHiker · 25/02/2025 14:38

Street parking has become an issue because two houses recently became 3 car households. We only have one car and next door have 2.

Next door’s parents have started getting involved. We have some bad blood with them already because they were really inconsiderate during their renovation and we were expected to suck it up because their daughter wanted the house done quickly. They knocked on our door a couple of months ago to ask us tell us not to park on the road in front of her house. We ignored them. Twice since, her dad has stood in the road and told us we can’t park there because he’s saving the space. And this week they put cones out and her mum was watching from the front room. I tried moving them and she moved them back. Neighbour is not visibly disabled. We’ve seen her walking dogs and running.

The neighbour is OK when we’ve spoken to her. We’re not friends by any stretch. Only brief ‘how’s it going’s’. I think it’s pointless talking to her directly because she must know they’re doing it (how else would they know when to come to ‘reserve’ the space?).

Her parents have also knocked to ‘give us advice’ on tidying up our garden bushes (because it affects the light in her garden).

I think if they knock on the door again we should just close the door on them. DH can’t do it because he’s too polite.

probably wasn’t clear before, mum was watching from the front room, she saw me get out of my car, I moved the cones, when I go back to my car and she moved them back, while telling me that I can park further down the road and should give the space to her daughter because this is her house.

So what you need to do is stack the cones, put them in your boot, park where you want, and then get the cones out of your boot and put them on their property - or give them to her if she comes running out.

It's illegal to put cones out nobody has the right to park on the road outside their home id just say well the law doesn't agree with you

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 25/02/2025 17:27

Pick the cones up and put them in your boot then park your car, take the cones out of your boot and put them in their garden.

OneCyanHiker · 25/02/2025 17:38

Clearly we’ve been too nice! It never occurred to me to put the cones in my car!

I could do a stand off when her dad stands in the space. If I approach from the other side I can stop on the corner without impeding traffic, wouldn’t be ideal to stop there but cars could still pass. Then him standing there will be pointless because I’ll be blocking her from parking when she does get home

Don’t run over any cones Hopping green or op.
my daughter did by accident and it jammed and made the radiator leak, cost a bit to sort.
just ark legallywhere you can and ignore the idiots

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 25/02/2025 21:36

Surely your argument is with the people across the road?

LunchtimeNaps · 25/02/2025 21:40

I would happily see this couple as a challenge.

But those people are parking legally too. There is no law against being a three car household.

This made me happy

Maybe the OP should keep a supply of Tunnocks aeroplanes to fly at the dad!

I would put the cones in the boot too. I would ignore the parents antics but at the same time I keep things pleasant with the actual people who live there.

northernbeee · 26/02/2025 08:16

I'd be parking there to annoy them too! It does show the entitlement of some people though, if you have 3 cars you would park 1 outside your house or close by and then the other 2 would go park further away, surely that's common sense? We did this when we were a 4 car household at 1 point, we could fit 2 on our drive then the other 2 would go park in parking bays and walk, rather than parking outside the house and neighbouring houses.

Northernladdette · 26/02/2025 08:16

Just remind him that though it’s unfortunate, there’s no legal requirement that says you have priority over the space outside your home. It’s everyone for themselves 🙂

Where’s the right thread? It sounds interesting!

purplehair1 · 26/02/2025 08:21

So her parents have all the time in the world to gatekeep her parking? Don’t they have anything better to do with their lives?

InMySpareTime · 26/02/2025 08:42

@FeralWoman it’s this thread:

What is something ‘weird’ that you do that other people don’t? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/5282329-what-is-something-weird-that-you-do-that-other-people-dont

Hard to do if they’re watching from the window

Then report them for illegal use of cones. It’s a public highway, they can’t stop you from parking.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 26/02/2025 08:50

Send her parents over the road to speak to the family with 3 cars and see how far they get with them.

It is no ones space on the road in front of the house, it maybe frustrating but she has no claim to it, and pretty sure the cones will be against regs so report them.

I had a neighbour try and do this to me and she stood in the road outside of her house and said I couldn't park there because he sister was coming and needed the parking space, I just said sorry but I live here and I need to be in and out the car (think we were going away or something so needed to load the boot). She told me i needed to get a permit for the spaces across the road and I said I will if you will and she moved and i parked. (one side of road was permit parking the other side was a free for all).

ButIDontLikePeas · 26/02/2025 08:51

We have arseholes like this on our road too. Our road is very narrow and only one car width wide. The bloke with the cones once sat on his horn whilst an ambulance was loading one of our elderly neighbours into the back. Nasty.

I would take the cones - which have been left abandoned on a public highway- . put them in my car and take them to the tip.

At no point did I suggest running over any cones

Why? It's legal to park there.

Tumbleweed44 · 26/02/2025 09:01

Record them on your phone and upload the footage to the police website as they are causing a hazard on a public road.
