Small water tanks- is this a modern house thing?

Absolutely livid this evening, running a bath to yet again step into a tepid pathetic pool of water and waste yet more of my favourite bath stuff.

Large 4 bedroom family house, you'd think they would have water tanks that could hold more than just a bath tub of hot water? If even one person has one short shower, the fucking thing needs heating up again if I want a bath, and it takes an hour.

I don't remember this in our older houses,
I will hold my hands up to saying I like a full, scolding bath, but it's a standard size.

Is it just our house? Is it yet another environmental irritation like our pathetic toilet flushes?!

I feel your pain, my eldest teen screeched and got stressed out tonight when her shower went cold.
Only one other child had had an 8 minute shower!
It should last for more than 2 showers surely? (4 bed house).

I had it on for 2 hours 5.30-7.30pm and tbf this was around 9pm so I will try adjusting the timing but it's so annoying,

Came from a rental house with a combi and it was lovely being able to have hot showers at whatever time of day and not worry about it

We get 4 showers after a 45 minute heating cycle here. Just!

Isn’t the problem just you have a tiny water tank?

we have a large water tank. We put in 500L new one as old owner had a 300l plus a 200l addition. It’s great. We have a large house and at full capacity it easily handles if 8 people have a shower or odd bath ( say 7 showers and one bath)

An average full bath is 120-150l so no wonder yours is empty after one bath.

Is it possible that you are only boosting the smaller bit to heat at the top of the cylinder? And not the main part of the cylinder? See if it has 2 thermostats into the tank - top and bottom section?

This all sounds so painful. When all you want is a hot bath!

We had no problems for years, but recently we've had issues.

BigDahliaFan · 25/02/2025 07:10

We replaced the previous tiny water cylinder from the 80s which could fill a foot bath with an unvented cylinder. It’s fine if it just the two us of us. But if we have a couple of guests we are always having to boost it or we get cold showers. It’s a 5 bed family house, it probably needs a second cylinder.

We have a large Worcester Bosch combi boiler which was recommended for our three storey 1930s house - absolutely brilliant.

We had the hot water cylinder removed and put a small radiator in the cupboard which is on low so we can still have a nice airing cupboard but with more storage where the cylinder was.

I was sceptical as people I knew had a combi said they were slow to fill a bath - but ours is just as fast as the old boiler.

@Maray1967

Would you mind letting me know which model Worcester Bosch combi you have?

It sounds like you have exactly what I want!

Yep.

@pwish I changed my hot water cylinder a few years ago. It was quite expensive, but definitely worth it. It should be a one-off cost though, as cylinders last for years.

pwish · 25/02/2025 07:40

Thank you I am definitely going to look into, we are doing some work to the house this year so will see if we have some left over.

For now, I've adjusted the timings that it comes on that should reheat it after teen has a shower after school so hopefully that'll mean I can bathe in the evenings!

Google seems to suggest 200-250l is needed for a family of 4, if in an energy efficient house. So more if more people, more use ie baths v showers, older house.

So I think 150l is definitely underpowered for your use. Maybe look at 250l for upgrade, or 300l if you all use baths

It’s a Greenstar CDi compact and the GC number is 47-406-48. It’s ten years old though so you’ll probably need to find out the current equivalent. It easily powers the loft room radiators - full height one in the bedroom and a smaller one in the en-suite - plus ten others on the ground and first floors. We have it serviced every year and at this last service it needed two new parts which we had replaced to improve its efficiency- but it has never broken down. We will definitely stick with Worcester Bosch when we do need to replace it.

Geneticsbunny · 25/02/2025 09:20

You should leave the hot water tank heating all the time. That might well fix the problem. Ithwn it will heat while you are using it.

pwish · 25/02/2025 09:28

@Geneticsbunny I read that last night, though read conflicting things online but have a smart meter so could try for a day to see how it works and if it makes the cost go up too much.

I have a technical engineer of the manufacturer calling me shortly so I will ask him, I emailed our developer and they told me to ask the manufacturer. I do tend to get a bee in my bonnet when annoyed!
