Timeless tiles, flooring, furnishings

We are extending our Georgian house to include a utility, shower room and family room. The building itself is being done sympathetically to the original house and in line with an approved heritage statement.

From a fixtures, fittings and furnishings perspective, we always try to avoid fashions and fads as I don't want to be redecorating every few years.

Any tips or ideas on things to use or avoid in your opinion?

I really like sage green, but think perhaps this is 'of the moment' and to be avoided? The same perhaps for dark coloured cabinets in the utility?

I honestly think it's quite hard. With regard to your shower room, you can probably choose a suite that will age gracefully but it's more challenging for the tiles. Styles that seemed like neutral choices 5 years ago are now suddenly not in vogue and get a slating on here and in other home decorating forums. Grey is a good example.

Timeless colours are typically very neutral but can look a little boring. As soon as you try and inject any personality, you start to walk the trend tightrope. Fortunately, paint is easy to change so you should go with what you like unless you think you might want to sell imminently. Just avoid high trends that are expensive or fiddly to undo or likely to go out of fashion quickly like panelling and colour drenching.

For kitchen / utility units, I think it's safer to go with wood as you can easily repaint that when fashions change.
