So what rooms would you have spotlights??
We have a large living room diner approx 14ft by 26ft. Electrician has recommended 8 spotlights on each side of the rooms so 16 spotlights in total in addition to 2 central lights.
Also, spotlights in bathroom, kitchen and hallway...
Are spotlights an in thing. I don't know much about lighting and need to make a decision by tomorrow.
Help

I hate spotlights. Especially in living areas. Cold harsh light and there's invariably at least one bulb gone or flickering. Might just tolerate them in a kitchen or bathroom. We don't have them anywhere in the house.

I hate spotlights as well. We do have them in bathrooms, utility and kitchen but, like a PP said, there's always one not working. I would never put them in a living room or bedrooms and am trying to work out what to replace them with in my kitchen.

I have pendants everywhere except the living room where I have slightly fancier things but still hang down. Easy to change the bulbs and easy to change the look with a different shade

I'm not a keen on spotlights either. But I've been told it's popular and fashionable.
Just feels very officy and supermarkets to me

We have chrome spotlights on a dimmer switch in lounge, kitchen and bathroom, I wouldn’t have them otherwise, we have them just on/off in hallway. Our lounge is similar size, but we only have 6 spotlights, we only have them on when we eat at one end of lounge at dining table. There is a lot of work, drilling holes in ceilings, so if you don’t like them, don’t be persuaded. Our Electrician charges £50 each spotlight and he’s a friend.

Spotlights are brilliant for kitchens hallways and any other place you need lots of light. We have them and never have one out - LEDs last forever.

I prefer pendants and lamps in living rooms and bedrooms as I want softer lighting there.

If you’re renovating to sell at some point soon, I would install spotlights. Most people prefer them from my experience especially in large spaces where pendant lighting can get lost (and look dated).

You can always reduce the number to reduce the impact of them.

in my bathroom I have a combination. So 6 mini spots linked to an extractor.

also 2 slim pendants not linked to extractor so that if we get up in the night we have soft lighting and no noise to disturb the other po.

works for us.

id recommend a socket for your electric toothbrush while your electrician is at it.

churrios · 24/02/2025 08:56

If you don’t like spotlights don’t get them. I don’t like them have pendants and sockets for floor lamps in lounge / dining area. Search articles on how to light a room.

churrios · 24/02/2025 08:59

For bathroom I have one main light and wall lights beside mirrors.

churrios · 24/02/2025 09:02

its in your electricians interest to up the number of electric points hence his advice based on his profit not your taste.

I have spotlights and a couple of these which are low wattage and good for night time use

I have a Philips hue xamento light in my bathroom, best decision I've made! I can tune the light to exactly how I want it.

Also have a light in the mirror as a utility light. I wouldn't have spot lights.

JustLikeThatBluebird · 02/03/2025 16:01

We don't have any, they're horrible and give a clinical feel.

Roomgigi · 02/03/2025 16:35

We have 9 spots in similar size room - warm white LED not cool white - but it's a kitchen diner with pendants over the dining area
I'm not sure I'd been keen on spotlights in a living area
