First time I saw a grass snake was it swimming across a lake as I was paddling a kayak. They're a whole world away from a tiny little slow worm (a legless lizard for those who don't know), shining like silver with their adorable little eyelids blinking.

Aw, a swimming snake! I've always really liked snakes. Adders are gorgeous, but my dog is such a numpty that he's likely to shove his nose right at one, so I do have to be careful in the warmer weather.

Bloody nora, it's a common newt.

It's really cute, they're a protected species so please don't hurt him!

As others have said, it's a newt.

I'm a toad patrol volunteer. At this time of year lots of toads and newts try to find ponds. There is a lane in our village which is a highway for toads and newts. We go out in the evening to try to pick them up from the road before they get squashed, and pop them inext to a pond in a residents garden.

I was out there last night with some other volunteers, and in the space of an hour we rescued 23 toads, 2 frogs and 9 newts. We also sadly came across 6 dead toads.

Any alligators ? 😂

It looks like a newt. I had black newts with orange bellies when i was a teenager. Lovely, gentle and very timid creatures.

It's crazy- how could one be ''terrified'' of a newt?

They are such benign , lovely little amphibians.

Right! This place never ceases to amaze me with what I'll end up reading next 🙈

Soporalt · 23/02/2025 15:58

Lovely. Every year we get newts living in the coldframe and frogs in the greenhouse. There is a pond over the road, but I'm not sure how they get here.

Not meaning to sound rude but how have we got so disconnected from nature that people can't recognise a newt and are terrified of the beautiful little thing?

And think an amphibian might be a rat. I mean, it's a wonder the OP has ventured outside at all.

menopausalmare · 23/02/2025 17:32

Last year we dug out our pond and temporarily moved the fish, frogs and newts to a paddling pool. Here's some frog porn for all you amphibiphiles.

Looks like a newt it's cute whatever it is. 🥰Do you have a garden pond or have any any neighbours with one.
