Worcester Bosch Greenstar Ri suddenly cut out. Help?!

So, been on our new house a month, heating and hot water has worked fine on a Nest thermostat control set up the whole time.
Has been working today fine, until now!

All of a sudden, the boiler (kitchen) and hot water tank (upstairs) both try to kick in when I turn the thermostat up or the hot water on, but after a few seconds it's like the pump or what ever it is runs out of energy and cuts out.

We have a blue light in the centre of the boiler (solid, not flashing which the instruction manual suggests indicates a fault).
The green light comes on as it tries to fire up, but as the pump type noise dwindles, the light goes out.

Anyone out there this time of night who has any suggestions?
Helpline is closed still 7am.
Reset suggested in the manual hasn't fixed it.
Stressing my little one is going to be freezing through the night.

It looks like it was installed in 2017, so thought it should be OK for a bit longer!

Thanks for any help you can give.

Can't even find that.
All I can see outside is the flu.

Need to find someone local now. Not got connections yet.

The condensate drain pipe is the only plastic pipe coming out of your boiler. It might be routed to the sink drainage etc if in a kitchen or bathroom.

No guarantee this is the fault though.

Like I say if you pay for home emergency cover as part of hone insurance this covers boilers not working up to a limit.

Just trying to hunt through the policy documents now.
Can't remember what we signed up for. I did that in a hurry as the estate agent suddenly wanted us to complete.
Really hope I chose that extra cover.

It could be a problem with your pressure vessel.

SeLHopeful2024 · 20/02/2025 09:09

Bugger!
We do have home emergency cover, but as there is no proof of service it isn't covered.

@CraftyGin would this be the water tank or something else?

It's not easy at this time of needing a repair, but you will get it sorted, whether it's a Worcester Bosch call out or a local heating engineer. One good thing is that Worcester Bosch continue to make parts for many years (unlike our old Ideal who'd stopped making them within ten years and wouldn't do a premium rate call out when our engineer couldn't fix). Overall it's generally considered one of the brands to go for. We've been here 11 years and never had a breakdown. My Mum's is 15 years old and had first (minor) repair. Whereas our old Ideal broke down ten times in ten years!

The Worcester Bosch boilers only have a 10 year warantee if they are serviced by an accredited engineer each year; and 5 year one if serviced each year by a non-accredited one (we were told this last year when we had a new one installed).

Just saw that you are in SE London. We always found South London Heating (in Penge) super responsive when we lived in that area.

Thank you.
In desperation (after 2 recommendations haven't answered) I've booked a British Gas repair to come out today.

I will look into organising a proper service arrangement once this is sorted, so appreciate the recommendation. 😊

Hope you can get it sorted quickly. Let us know what it is in the end, as it's always good to know what it was for anyone searching through this type of thread in the future.

Don't unscrew the boiler!

Your boiler is a regular boiler not a combi boiler so there isn't a pressure gauge. Loss of pressure affects combi and system boilers. Not Regulars.

Can you use your cylinder immersion for hot water in the meantime ?

Definitely call worcester bosch to check the guarantee. Mine was under guarantee even though the serial number wasn't recognised on their website (I think their website is pretty rubbish, but they are quite good on the phone ) .

You mention the previous owner didn't supply proof of service - that's odd, usually conveyancing solicitors insist on proof.
There may be proof in the benchmark/ servicing page of the manual. Have they left you a manual for the boiler? Usually in the back few pages there is a service log - hopefully that has been filled in ?

If boiler is no longer under guarantee, Worcester do their own fixed price breakdown call. I'm not sure how much it is nowadays but it's worth a call. A worcester bosch engineer will have the parts on his van . (Saves a local plumber coming out and then having to go away to order the part and come back)

Don't worry, I've grabbed my duvet not a screw driver.
We have all the installation documents, instructions etc. Service history section is blank.

WB said that they would only fix boiler and if it's anything else related but not their kit it isn't covered.

Going to have to chalk this up to experience and accept I may not have chased or asked enough questions when we bought the house.

Update:
Boiler was actually fine. The pump on the water tank was the culprit.
British Gas came to the rescue in the end, and everything is back up and running.

Thanks for everyone chipping in with advice etc.
Even though the boiler is fine, it has made me prioritise getting a service plan in place ASAP.

If it's 8 years old, it may be towards the end of it's life - the WB website says 10 - 15 years for the Greenstar range on average, but without servicing, 7 - 10. Just to help you plan for replacement!

I'm glad it was all sorted easily!

SeLHopeful2024 · 21/02/2025 11:26

@YouveGotAFastCar My contingency planning is just increasing by the day!
Going to arrange to get it serviced soon, so hopefully they can give us an idea of its condition.
I hope the previous people did service it, but it's looking unlikely given the lack of paperwork.

Also discovered more plumbing issues today. It seems a lot has been done by the owner, and not very well.
