Advice on Whitton TW2

Greetings MN Forum!

I am seeking some insight on the Whitton TW2 area in Twickenham. My other half and I currently live in separate homes, me in Surbiton and him in the Uxbridge area (works in the Heathrow area), spending time every week when he is off work (he does a 4 on / 4 off shift). I mostly work from home in Surbiton so his off time is spent here. We are now looking for a combined home (3-4beds). We look to be outpriced from Surbiton so are looking in the nearby areas (Stoneleigh, Ewell) as well as a mid point between us with the TW2 Twickenham area being a good in-between. Only thing is - I know nothing about the area. We have no children (I’m 50…he is 58). We need a home to give us enough space as well as for occasional visiting family (our older parents and young nephews). Most important to me is a nice feel of an area, accessibility to amenities, good travel network into London and a place which can be home for a good many years. I look to have found two properties of some interest in the TW2 area but no nothing of the area. So my questions are —

  1. is Whitton (TW2) a nice place to live generally?
  2. is it a well placed / perceived spot within Twickenham or deemed unfavourable? I ask as I don’t particularly like Hounslow and know it’s not too far…
  3. are there particular areas to avoid?

Any insight / guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It is a nightmare when the rugby is on. The main road to Whitton runs past the stadium. Btw my daughter and boyfriend were priced out of Surbiton and found sth in Esher.

I went to school in isleworth (near west middx hospital) years ago. Some days the stench from Mogden Lane sewage works spread far and wide and PE outside on those days was bloody awful. I'd be minded to beware of that when searching.

My family have always lived here and I left Twickenham and I returned to live here because despite the Rugby season and the brief hell it brings with the surge of people that arrive like a swarm and are gone just as quickly as they arrived, there is something quite nice about Twickenham. Amenities are great, travel links are decent, sitting/walking by the river in summer is wonderful and I love that they shut roads down to do community things 😊

Thank you for responding. The disruption from the stadium is definitely a consideration. Not sure it extends to the area I’ve seen some houses.

Thank you so much for responding. With your knowledge of the area - would you happen to know if the TW2 (which I think is more Whitton) is within the area you think is nice (for all the reasons you mentioned)? Thank you

Thank you. Will do some more research about this.

If you go to the Mail website, they have an article today about areas of the country and the crime rate. If you hover over the Whitton area it will give you the stats

Hmm personally I'd consider Whitton more akin to Hounslow in feel than Twickenham. Definitely not like Surbiton.

Agree with above, you could look at Esher/Walton-on-Thames/Hersham, however these are a bit more suburban and not within the TfL zones.

BrownieBlondie01 · 17/02/2025 15:33

Teddington is nice but probably akin to Surbiton in price, if not more expensive.

Or Kingston?

I live on the TW1/TW2 border, and work in Whitton. There are bits of Whitton I would happily live in (Woodlawn Estate e.g.) and bits I'd be wary of (closer to Hounslow border). You need to visit and have a look around.

FloSu · 17/02/2025 17:27

Thank you. The property I am considering is within the Woodland Estate…so this puts me a bit at ease. I went out there today for a wander around and feel good about the area. Seems nice enough. Appreciate the feedback

Whitton and Twickenham are two separate towns. Twickenham has a lot more going for it but of couse it's more expensive than Whitton.
Which roads in Whitton are you looking at?

FloSu · 17/02/2025 17:45

Lyndhurst Avenue (in the Woodlawn Estate)

You'd be close to Crane Park which is lovely -you can walk through it for miles following the river Crane. You're about a 20 minute walk from Whitton station though - there's a bus that runs every 20 minutes or so.
You won't see the rugby crowds on Woodlawn estate but you'd still have to avoid traffic coming in off the A316 on match days. Generally it's a nice, quiet area.

FloSu · 17/02/2025 22:40

Thank you so much for this. Really helpful. I tried out the bus route today and went up the high street and station. Also drove around and saw the gates through to Crane Park. It felt nice and quiet.
