Move on friday - mold on wall HELP

Cherryblossom1723 · 16/02/2025 10:16

I have moved the sofa from the walls today to clean the skirting boards etc ready for moving on friday. I was making sure everywhere was ready cleaned for the new owners.
Upon doing so I have found the wallpaper around the ready has got damp and has patches of mold on it. I've pealed back some of the wallpaper to check the wall and the wall is fine. It's just on the wallpaper.

What do I do? Do I just clean the wallpaper as best as I can do with bleach? Remove the wall paper on that whole wall and leave it bare (which will look a mess for the new owners)
I'm in a panic on my own with two small children and im at work all next week.

Please be kind, I really need advise. We have took 10months to get to this point (from when the buyers first visited) and I really don't want it to go wrong now.

Thank you for reading

Just clean the wallpaper and stick it back down. If the wall is fine it might just be caused by condensation from the sofa being up against the wall and not reappear.

Don’t peel the wallpaper off. I’d be really pissed off if the seller did that before leaving!

Good luck with the move.

But or borrow a dehumidifier and run it continuously, if it's just condensation and not a leak it will dry up dead quick.

I have cleaned the wallpaper down with bleach but it still has marks all over it. The wallpaper has like a shiny coating to it which im guessing the bleach maybe can't clean through properly. I'll try attaching a photo.

So much stress. I don't want to leave it awful for the new owners. Wall is definitely OK behind ive checked all along.

It needs to dry out and will be fine. They’ll want to decorate anyway.

Will you have time to remove the paper and paint the wall white?

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 16/02/2025 10:53

Or dettol mould and mildew remover? You will need to tape a bin bag or two to the skirting boards to protect the car as the spray might bleach out colour. It’s better than bleach at removing the black spots/marks.

Thank you all for the advice. I guess I've heard lots of stories of people moving into their home and being really upset and i just don't want that for our buyers

Lightly scrub the mold off the wallpaper with a gentle cleaner, dry the area well, and ensure good ventilation. For any stubborn patches, you could carefully remove just those sections instead of stripping the whole wall.

you’ve sold the house, a survey has been done, you’ve exchanged with a date for completion, you haven’t done anything either wrong or deliberate 🤷🏽‍♀️
my house had had damp treated and was still prone to damp so probably a few little areas came to light in the back of cupboards etc once we’d left but that’s not my problem, the buyers solicitor would remind them they’ve had a survey 🤷🏽‍♀️
I would clean it and dry it myself as discussed upthread then not worry

Get a bottle of HG mould remover the foam one spray it on the affected parts and leave it on overnight its brilliant

SilkiePenguin · 08/11/2025 12:23

You can get mould spray which may work on that if you have time, its quick just spray on and wipe off. Tescos seems to sell one of them (comes in white bottle) or a DIY store.

Assume it went well, she moved out 9 months ago. 🧟‍♂️ 🧟‍♀️
