Best approach to painting fresh plaster

I'm sort of aware I need to white wash it first, so half water half white paint before I add any proper paint or colour? Is this correct? Is it just one coat like that and what's the best paint to buy for this please? Sorry, very new to DIY 🙈

Yep 50/50. Just use the cheap white emulsion, B&Q sell massive tubs of it. Wait till it’s dried then you can paint your white or colour on top.

For teh wash coat you want matt emulsion. Avoid the expensive or cheap stuff. Do not use silk, it'll peel off.

Wait for the plaster to dry before doing the base wash coat.
If the plaster has been polished really smooth then worth roughing up the surface with sandpaper first to help adhere.
With watery paint it can be quite messy so cover everything.
Use a brush, the brush strokes in the paint are good texture for the later roller coats to stick to.
I was quite conservative with coverage the first time I did it, and wanted to avoid runs. So I did a second wash coat.
Then you can paint with Matt emulsion on a roller.

I would use a watered down version of the actual paint you’re going to use. I used a cheap emulsion as a mist coat and the Farrow and Ball topcoat didn’t like it at all.

We've always used half pva glue and half water mixture on newly plastered walls. It gives the paint something to grab onto.

Thank you all for the advice

I've always just used one coat white paint undiluted.

Screwfix sell new plaster paint, very low voc, which we've just bought as we're having a couple of rooms plastered this week. I'm planning to leave a week to ten days for the plaster to dry before painting. Heating on and dehumidifier running probably. It is obvious when plaster dries, it goes a lovely pale colour.
The longer you leave it the better, but we're on a time crunch.
I will be painting the final colour on top the day after the new plaster paint goes on. I prefer trade emulsions with low or very low voc.
Crown fastflow is great for wood and metal, primed with Bedec All Prime. I like Johnstone's paints for walls, and they will colour match any colour. You want something a bit tougher for high traffic areas, scrubable or wipeable is good, normal matt emulsion will need redoing every year or 2, get something a bit more hard wearing and you can stretch that.
If budget isn't an issue then Little Greene paints are lovely.

Just to add, you get these paints in builders merchants and paint/decorating specialist shops, like Brewers. You don't have to be in the trade or have an account to shop in them.
