Best way to clean *insides* of windows?

Window cleaner due next week before house goes on sale for the spring (she writes shivering in cold waiting for bloody spring)... but we need to clean internal windows and am looking for recommendations.

Reading past threads people seem to suggest -

  1. Amazon "e cloths"
  2. "Squeegees" (which one?)
  3. Vinegar water
  4. HG products

Can someone tell us the holy grail solution? Needs all internal windows shining and the conservatory ones are especially in need of s proper shine ..

I forget the brand as it was a tk Maxx find but I bought a 'window/glass cleaning cloth set' - one was soft microfibre for wiping the product over the glass and then you use the other one which has a different texture and sort of buffs the glass to a lovely streak free shine! I just use them with whatever 'glass cleaner' spray I have.

I use hot water with a squirt of washing up liquid to wash it, then a window vac to take it off-perfect results.

I’m not a fan of microfibre or “magic” window cloths due to microplastics, I just use a cotton cloth

after many years trying different cloths and methods I have recently found my own holy grail, my windows have never been cleaner, like crystal clear no streaks
I use the pink windolene spray, spray all window, wash using a j-cloth , don’t wet it first then dry and shine with kitchen roll

purplebrat · 10/02/2025 18:57

I use flash kitchen degreaser in the kitchen as I find you get a build up on it, then I use method glass cleaner, all other windows I just use the glass cleaner. No special cloths, just kitchen roll.

50/50 solution of white vinegar and water with a splash of washing up liquid. Used with kitchen roll.

Hand held steamer and a good quality microfibre cloth. Brilliant results and no chemicals

Thanks all! Very different suggestions from everyone! I guess we will start with one of your ideas and work our way through them !

Window vac with a mild detergent and finish off with a linen glass cloth.

Lambpieforme · 10/02/2025 19:22

Karsher window vac, also great for mirrors and granite countertops

queenvelux · 10/02/2025 19:23

Honestly? Ask window cleaner to do insides as well. That's the only thing that works for us!

Felizsenora · 10/02/2025 19:25

White vinegar and newspaper...no streaks

Our window cleaner said no because he uses a water pole thing so I could see his point…

Car screen wash and an old terry nappy (last used on a babies bottom 20 years ago, I suppose you could use an old towel...)

Good enough to get all the road grot off my car with no streaky bit and amazing on house windows too

Another vote for the window vac here!

I have always made a pigs ear of windows due to astigmatism and now glaucoma. The harder I work at it the worse the smearing.

Window vac makes short work of it and the results are perfect.

FadedRed · 10/02/2025 20:18

One of the best things to use to get a streak free finish on inside windows is newspaper after washing with detergent and rinsing with clean cloth. Wear gloves as your hands get filthy from the ink.

muddyford · 10/02/2025 20:21

Nilglass spray. I have used it for years and was chuffed when I found the company who does my framing also uses it on framing glass.

That's what I do. Absolutely no need to buy chemical ridden, nasty window cleaner. Tbh, I rarely use anything other than white vinegar/water.

gingergiraffe · 10/02/2025 21:58

I wash with a water/diluted floor cleaner. Then use a steamer and dry cotton t-towel to buff up. Streak free finish. Also use this method to wash the outsides of windows.

Lovelysummerdays · 10/02/2025 22:06

Window vac. I have a pole extension on mines that is hood for doing conservatory ceiling.
