Leak - insurance claim

We had a leak from our bathroom through our kitchen ceiling, lights pouring with water etc. got an emergency plumber and it turns out mice had chewed through a pipe that feeds the shower (we live rurally so mice are not uncommon however we haven’t heard any scrabbling about so didn’t know they were there) Part of the kitchen ceiling has come down and there is water damage to other parts of the ceiling.

trying to decide if claiming in the home insurance will lead to a drastic hike in premium at renewal? Is it worth it? We’ve never claimed before. Our excess is £500.

Hi
How many years no claims bonus do you have ? If you’re on maximum and make a claim your premium might go up in the region of 25-30%. Then you’d need to factor in building it up again over the next few years. Best to check your policy wording but most household policies don’t cover damage caused by rodents ( it’s an standard industry exclusion)

Maybe get a quote first so you have some idea of the cost? I had a leaking radiator just before Christmas that knackered the bedroom carpet. Replacement carpet and fitting cost just under £600 but my excess for water damage is £450- with the guarantee that my premium would rise for making a claim for less than £150 I didn't claim. If it had gone through to downstairs and needed replacement floorboards, pipes, ceilings etc I would have claimed.

Thank you! We have maximum no claims. We have a plasterer coming out tomorrow to quote, but I think we will end up not claiming, it seems a hassle and not worth it for the price hike!

I had a claim for a leak, paid £3000 out, premium went up £100, so reasonable, Though I would be worried if I ever had to claim again as costs would likely rise greatly.
