How many watts for kitchen lighting?

We are currently having a new kitchen fitted, it's galley style 4m x 7m we have two sets of these lights so six bulbs total, the recommended bulbs are 4.5 led candle bulbs, will that be bright enough? I think that's equivalent to 40w in old style bulbs which wouldn't be bright, but 6 of them in a fairly small space? Ceilings are high if that makes any difference, and plenty of windows/natural light during the day, so it's for evenings.

Look at the rating of the bulbs in lumens which is the measure of brightness that works for led bulbs.

400 lumens is like an old 40 watt light
700 lumen is a reasonable task light

I think you would need more than 6 lights to give adequate illumination to specific areas.

I need good lighting in a kitchen and what you have suggested wouldn't be enough.

Will you have lighting under the wall cupboards as well?

I think what is more important is where the lights are positioned relative to where your work space is. We currently have 2 x 3 bulbs but they are central in the kitchen so behind me when I'm chopping on the worktop. Without our under cabinet lights I wouldn't be able to see what I'm doing properly. For just being in the kitchen the other lights are fine.

You really need good lighting over your worktops, even if it's on a different switch to the "mood" lighting. Those bar lights are meant to be accent lighting over a table or island.

Yes, two types of lighting needed really. Also I have a dimmer switch so can have it at varying levels if brightness.

Under unit lighting is my husband's hobby! He's done his parents' house, our house and my dad's house. The lighting is amazing and we never use the ceiling lights at all. He's now getting twitchy to do my daughter's kitchen!

You want to think about lumens these days. We have just done our kitchen lighting, the dining side has a dimmable light up to 33W/4300lm, plus three flush lights on kitchen side 17.5W/1200lm each, plus under cabinet lights, after years of struggling under dim badly placed spotlights it's a huge improvement.

Those little candle bulbs are really not going to light a big room.
