Drying cupboard

We are hoping to get our large-ish kitchen/diner redone soon. At the moment we have three floor to ceiling cupboards which have washing machine and cleaning stuff in (Hoover, mop etc)

Whilst there is space for a stacked washer and dryer we only have a washing machine.

I'm really keen for some kind of drying cupboard. Has any one done this and can share ideas/photos? I'm thinking of rails etc with a dehumidifier in the bottom....

Do it! I've posted about my drying room before but it's truly my favourite part of my house 🙈

Mine is actually really an airing cupboard as it houses the boiler and large cylinder but it's pretty big and you can walk in it. I'm not posting a pic as it's not posh or anything but it's so handy. It just has rails and some perforated shelving but omg if the hot water or heating is on, clothes dry so quickly. It's especially good for jeans! Wet coats dry quickly and soggy trainers dry without smells.

I don't have a dehumidifier in there, but it's never developed mould, I think probably as there are a few gaps up to the loft. If you're not having a cylinder in yours you could perhaps have a rad and maybe an extractor fan fitted?

Honestly, if it was slightly bigger I'd stick a chair in there and have it as a reading room 😳 It smells glorious, of freshly washed clothes, is so cosy and has the added bonus that nobody would know I was in there 😂

Sorry, didn't mean to quote your OP. That's my pet hate but the second time I've done it this week 🤦‍♀️

@CellophaneFlower that sounds like the dream!

Unfortunately boiler is over the other side of the kitchen and the cupboards are on an outside wall so will need some form of heat and/or moisture removal to get anything to actually dry I think....

I have one. It’s where the old immersion tank was and the associated airing cupboard. I had a very small radiator put in and rails on which I hang my clothes on hangers and those octopus pegging things for socks, etc. when the heating’s off in summer I have a tiny oil filled radiator plugged in there and it works very well too.

In my utility room I have double rails with a slot for a dehumidifier underneath. I don't have a door on that bit as the utility room is closed off and it means I can leave wool items spread out on a rack over the sink and they will dry too. It works so well, and then things go straight into wardrobes on their hangers - socks/ pants are on a multiple clip thing and hung on the rail too

@Reallybadidea this is the exact reel that inspired me! Just wanted to see if any one had done it in real life... if MN is more real than Instagram 🤣

Haha I did think it might have been! If it helps, when I sent the reel to our architect, she said that she had designed quite a few like this and they worked well.

We're getting a pull-down rail like this to make use of the full height of the cupboard https://www.kitchenfittingsdirect.com/gb/bedroom-wardrobe-fittings/reclining-clothes-lift.html

I was about to post this! I'm planning something similar for the next house.

I have a large cupboard (small pantry size) with my washing machine and boiler in that I use as a drying room. I have rails mounted on the wall and door but one of the most useful things (which I inherited) is a row of pegs up near the ceiling. With the aid of a broom handle you can hang duvet covers, sheets, etc, up there.

I had a small radiator put in there when I changed the boiler and also have a dehumidifier for when the heating is off.

Geneticsbunny · 10/02/2025 08:53

Get an extractor fan fitted, that will help deal with the moisture build up. In Japan you can get these plug in heat mats which you put underneath clothes rails to speed up clothes drying. Maybe you could do something similar?

Fifiesta · 10/02/2025 09:12

We have a drying cupboard.
Before we updated the C/H and moved the boiler to the loft, it was originally an airing cupboard, we had the tank removed, and a small dual energy radiator installed. We then put in a clothes rail. In the winter it mainly runs on the central heating, but when the central heating is off we run it on electric.
Clothes that are hung up in the evening can be dry the next day.
Works really well, especially when U.K. weather rains all day.
We do have a tumble dryer, but that lives in the garage, and is mainly just used for bedding and towels.

DF once went to see DGM and couldn't find her - she'd been out for a walk and got cold so was sitting in the airing cupboard doing a crossword! 😂

thefamilyofthings · 10/02/2025 09:20

We have one too with the boiler in. As well as the rack and a rail for coat hangers, we also have a way of hanging up one of those multi peg things for all the pants and socks which doubles the capacity.

But do it. We put it in when we refurbished an old house and it is one of my favourite things!

LaPalmaLlama · 10/02/2025 10:15

One thing that is possibly obvious but I didn't know is that an unvented hot water tank (aka mains pressure tank) is so well insulated that it won't give out any heat - it's the pipes off it that give out the heat. Yup, I see people thinking "well yeah duh" but I'm hopefully not the only person who thought boxing in the tank would be the solution :-). It would be if enough if the pipes for the heating are also in the cupboard and there are enough of them but this isn't always the case.

We are currently getting rid of our gravity fed system with "vintage" jacketed hot water tank which is currently in a linen/ drying cupboard and just replacing with a cheap but super efficient Screwfix radiator as pp suggested.

CrazyBaubles · 10/02/2025 12:41

I don't have one but wish I did (we don't have space).
We do have a very small utility room with a radiator in it and DH has put up 2 retractable rails which I use in the winter. That works well but it's a bit ugly when you go in there.
