Rats in the loft!

We have been in a privately rented house for 2 years and just before Christmas discovered there are rats in the loft. DP looked after we heard scattering and saw the droppings!

Letting agent told us to contact a local pest control company who have been out twice, declaring that the rats were getting in through an old vent in the garage that had become unsealed. Sealed it back up, rats persist as I can hear them every night when I’m in bed. when the pest control chap looked in the loft he actually found old bait trays that they use themselves, so it’s evident the previous tenants had this issue too.

Spoke to the agency to let them know it’s persisted and they’ve come back saying they’re sending round their handyman to see if there’s any holes that need filling.

Surely a handy man isn’t going to cut it when pest control have already had a look around? Something else is going on and needs proper investigation.

We are going to have to bin our belongings in the loft because I sure as hell am not using anything up there for my kids after rats have been all over it for months!

I can’t take it any longer. Every night I dread going to bed because I can hear them in the foundations of the walls and above my head in the loft. It sounds like they’re going to get in to our rooms.

we are in rented accommodation and I haven’t heard back despite chasing it a couple times. I’m not sure the landlord wants to take it any further now pest control have been out twice!

My local council charge £16 for pest control to come out. It may be worth checking on your councils website as even if you own your house they’ll come out.

I would definitely move.

Are the dead rats still there?

It's not always simple to get rid of them. My brother had squirrels and it's so incredibly difficult to get rid of them. It's not always an immediate fix. Rats or mice are easier than squirrels.
They seem to be doing what they are meant to be.
Pay pest control- they have done.
Get handyman to check holes- good to get a second opinion.
If it's mice rather than rats they can get through a tiny hole so it has to be thoroughly checked.
Try and record the noise when you hear it next so you can play it back to them. Could they be getting in through a neighbouring property? If a neighbour has a hole they could be getting through there and into your loft.

A friend had this and they were coming in via next doors loft. They were climbing up next doors pipe, then squeezing in through a hole. Took lots of complaining to get them to do anything.

It takes a while OP.

The pest control woman told us that rats can make themselves as small as a 50 pence piece to fit through holes.

She laid bait trays in our loft and garden and after about 3 or 4 weeks they were gone.

And yes, the noise of them in the loft nearly sent DH to an early grave.

Good luck.

They didn’t die in your home then I take it? Did you do anything after that to make sure more couldn’t find their way in, or just left it?

I still haven’t heard them again so assuming they’ve died!

@Verminprobs
The pest controller said that after they eat the poison, they go off in search of water and then die...

Yes, after that, we got a roofer round to seal up any visible homes/spaces.
